From the lands of Britanniato the far reaches of Libya, the Empire was at its extent. War plans for Hispania was abandoned, due to the Dynastic marriages between the two great powers. But with this amount of territory, books were limited to journals and research books that few can understand. Some people tried to convert research books into literary based texts, rather than numerical texts. But to distribute these books throughout the Empire means that they need to write about 300 books per day. Now, why do this in the first place? Well, with the constant Civil Wars, Uprisings and failed invasions, many libraries were destroyed. Literacy dropped by a staggering degree. The new generation couldn't read properly. That is until the invention of the "Press Machine" or the "Torcular Machina" in 570 A.D. by the Research Institute in Sicily.
With this contraption, a skilled worker could print about 3,600 pages per workday. Now, they could produce a hundred copies of one book per week, maybe more. Knowledge spread throughout Europe, Northern Africa and Asia through trade routes. A series of events occured within the Empire and beyond. Literacy increased, researchers were inspired and new technologies, both old and new was discovered and rediscovered. Germania and Scandinavia was also affected by this event. This unintentional spread of culture eventually made The Empire a cultural center of the entirety of Europe and the Middle East.
Of course, it had its downsides. Being able to print a thousand pages a day means that people who oppose a faction has the power to spread propaganda across the entire Empire. In 576 A.D. a movement know as the "White Purity" opposed the School of Magicians, who see their Magic as Satanic or Demonic. With this, they wrote a propaganda book that opposed the School. Some Church Bishops took note of this and eventually sided with the "White Purity " and started the "Great Purge". Of course, some Church officials opposed this idea and defended the school. This event is known as the "Great Schism". The split of the Church almost tore the Empire in half. A Civil War broke out.
The war lasted for a decade. 2 Million took part in the war. A third of Europe's population was wiped out. New weapons of war was manufactured. Land based Greek Fire Cannons that can shoot about 25 meters away, meaning it has more range than the Greek Fire on ships. Although these cannons were big and heavy. Larger Onagers that could throw projectiles that can weigh about 200 pounds. Portable crossbows that can shoot multiple projectiles in one load. Yet, this crossbow proved more effective as its bolts can pierce through wooden shields, which was standard issue. These weapons of war caused a dramatic change in warfare. Trenches were common in a defensive army. Legionaries now carry Shields that are either coated with Iron or are completely made of iron. At one time, a Separatist Legion who ran out of replacable shields, chose to cover their old battered shields with padded cloth, which was surprisingly effective.
The Civil War came to a stalemate. The Empire, who supported the Magicians accepted the deal with the Purifier Separatists, who proposed a truce. Unfortunately this truce would go on for many years to come. The Imperial Church against the Purifier Church. (577-587 A.D.)
