I was hauling ass through the woods trying to ignore the burning sensation in my side. I knew I didn't have much time before he came back and realized I was gone.
When I woke up, my hands were tied, my mouth was duct-taped, and I was in the truck alone. I could tell we were in the woods, but I wasn't sure where.
Eventually he came back to the truck and drove away without saying anything to me. He ignored all of the sounds I made as I struggled to speak against the duct-tape.
I recognized Leah's house when we pulled up. He went inside the home and came back out a short while later with her in tow.
She slid in the front seat and turned to give me a smile.
Bitch.
He drove us back to the woods, grabbed the shovel from the back, and instructed Leah to pull me out of the truck.
She walked up with a smirk and opened the door.
Right before he smashed the shovel across the back of her head.
Leah fell forward into my lap while my dad gave me a look of carelessness. He lifted her body and walked deeper into the woods.
Frantically, I searched the truck for something sharp to cut the zip ties off of my wrists.
I sat back frustrated when I didn't see anything. Then I remembered the mechanics of zip ties. If you rub them against a solid surface, hard enough, you can break them.
I maneuvered my body so that my hands could pull the door handle, throwing my body to the ground when it opened.
Putting my back against the truck, I pushed up into a standing position and began sliding the zip ties up and down the door.
It was taking so long that I was afraid it wasn't going to work. I pushed harder against the door and continued sliding until the zip ties gave way and my hands were free.
Still running, I tried to gauge how long it had taken us to reach that spot in the woods.
It was dark out so I couldn't really see where I was going.
"Avaaaa!"
I tripped in surprise and had to stifle a scream as I felt the stabbing pain increase.
"Ava! I'm not going to hurt you, I swear! We're going to move away. Our family just needs a fresh start!" My dad yelled as he shone a flashlight looking for me.
I stayed hidden behind a tree, praying he couldn't see me.
The crunching of leaves got closer to me and my heart rate increased as I waited to see if he found me.
When he kept walking, I silently thanked God.
The problem now was that I didn't know any other way out of here. If I went straight ahead, I'd run into him. If I went another way, I'd probably get lost.
I was trying to think of something but I was coming up empty. I wish I had a weapon of some sort to hit him with.
The shovel.
Turning around, I crouched down and made my way back to the truck.
My dad began to talk again as he walked back towards me, realizing I was still in the woods.
