CHAPTER EIGHT: Vengeance
THAT AFTERNOON, THOMAS TALKED TO JOHNNY DOGS WHILE TABITHA WENT TO FETCH MAGGIE.
They were going camping and to to Wales for two or more days, going out to the woods to destroy the cursed sapphire with gypsy witchcraft because Tabitha wanted it destroyed. She wanted it destroyed for the damage it caused, and that Charity still would've been alive if it didn't exist.
When she wasn't sad or depressed, Tabitha was angry. Not at Thomas, but herself and Vicente Changretta. Changretta was the one who have the order to kill Thomas Shelby, but the bullet landed in Charity Hearn's chest instead of his. Tabitha wanted vengeance against the Italian since it was his tongue that gave the order.
She told Thomas that when they'd capture him to keep him alive until the black birds sing, a beautiful sound that Tabitha's sister never heard again. Then Tabitha said to cut off Changretta's ears first, and to leave the tongue so he could explain why. She wanted Changretta to suffer for the pain he had caused, and Thomas wanted the same.
Thomas and Johnny Dogs loaded the Prairie Schooner Wagon the family owned. Theo and the Shelby family was downstairs, but they didn't know Thomas and Tabitha were leaving with Maggie in her arms. Finn went to find cigars when they had finished loading up, Thomas was driving with Tabitha sitting down beside him with Maggie in her lap, dressed in her blue little coat and dress. Johnny Dogs sat in the back, and they could hear Arthur yelling for Thomas as they left the house. Finn was trying to run after the wagon but Arthur and John stopped.
"Tommy, Tabby, they're coming out in the drive," Johnny Dogs said, popping his head out of the wagon between Thomas and Tabitha. "You're not going to tell them?"
"Tell them what?" Thomas asked.
"That we're going to Wales."
"We left them a note, Johnny," Tabitha said, holding her baby close.
"Did you tell them why we're going to Wales?" Johnny Dogs asked.
"No," Thomas answered.
"At some point you two are gonna tell me why we're going to Wales?"
"Yeah. When we get there."
"Should've brought me a woman too, Tommy," Johnny said.
"Johnny, there's a child in the wagon," Tabitha scolded.
"It's a woman we're going to see," Thomas said.
"Right," Johnny said.
Then he spoke to Apollo, Tabitha's favorite horse that she brought to Arrow House.
"There, boy. Walk on," Thomas said.
The drive wasn't that long, they stopped when they reached the woods. They set up camp near an old pond, and Johnny Dogs and Thomas were quick to start a fire in the dark, gloomy, weather. Tabitha was in the wagon with Maggie, eating berries and edible leaves. Once the fire was done, Thomas was looking over the pond, lost in his thoughts.
"See to the horses, Johnny," Thomas said, walking back to the wagon.
"Aye, Tommy," Johnny said, leaving the wagon.
