A/N: In all honesty I would rather be patted, but that's just my opinion. Type in the comments whether you would like to pat or be patted! I've been listening to Gurenge by Lisa a lot to get those Demon Slayer vibes going through my brain, if you know what I mean. These next few chapters will be character building and establishing the relationships between the reader and the other characters. The story starts off when the reader is eleven. Well, enough with this author's note! Onto the story!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The early morning sunlight beat down onto your eyelids, causing them to flutter open. With a slight groan you slowly got out of your futon and stretched, relishing in the satisfying 'pop' that your joints made. Your mind was still groggy as you rolled up your futon, and placed it in the corner of your small room.

"Y/N!! Hurry up! I swear if you went back to sleep..." It took a moment for your tired mind to realize that that voice belonged to your brother and he was talking to you.

You blinked once, trying to process what he said. What did he mean 'hurry up'? It was a perfectly good Saturday morni- and that when it hit you.

    "Shi-"

"Language" That was older brother instincts at their finest. "For an eleven year old you can really curse like a sailor, Y/N."

If it was any other second you would have had some snarky response right up your sleeve, but now was not the time to be back talking your older brother. Currently you were losing a battle with one of your (F/C) kimonos, your limbs getting tangled in the fabric, not one of your finest moments I might add. Slipping on one of your shoes and pushing the shoji to the side, you hopped out of your room and down the hallway towards B/N.

"I'M COMING, I'm coming!" you yelled as you reached your brother, successfully placing your shoe on your left foot. "Don't leave without me!"

"Pfft~ You really are a mess little sister"

"Shut up. You are too! A love sick mess at that."

He shot you a glare, but you just giggled, walking out of the house. You had always liked to tease B/N about Yui, ever since the first day you caught him looking at her. Yui was the newest addition to the L/N family. B/N had been courting her for a while, a little too long for your liking,(Many times you wondered why he didn't simply ask her to marry him. They were clearly in love.) until he finally proposed. The wedding had been only a few days ago, which put your brother in an especially amazing mood.

You let out a sigh as you admired the beginnings of spring all around you, starting to walk on the path to the village. Today was the last day that you would get to spend with your brother, because Yui and him were moving into a house a few towns over. They had told you which one it was, but you had forgotten a long time ago. Yes, you would see him again, but not nearly as often as before, so you wanted to cherish the day as much as possible. Humming slightly, you continued your trek along the dirt path.

"Its a beautiful day isn't it," your brother stated, catching up with you.

He was carrying a multitude of things in a little sack on his right shoulder. Your father had asked him to bring them so that he could restock his store. You came from a long line of merchants, each very wealthy and prosperous. Your father, however, wasn't. Your family had hit hard times when your mother, M/N, contracted a disease. Your father worked over time and used any extra money for doctors and medicines, leaving everyone in the household dirt poor.

"Yeah, it really is nice," you mused, turning your head upward towards the sky. "The Sakura trees should be blossoming soon."

"Mhm, I just don't want spring to end. It's too hard to work in the summer heat."

Your conversation stopped as the path through the woods opened up, revealing a small town. It was mid-morning now, so everything was bustling with traders and buyers, each going about their day in an orderly fashion. A few people waved and offered you and your brother greetings, most of them your father's clients, as you weaved your way in-between vendors.

Eventually you and B/N made it to your father's shop, immediately being greeted with a warm smile as you walked in through the door.

"Good Morning," He said happily. Your father had always been an enthusiastic man, even when things took a turn for the worst. "Did you bring the supplies?"

"Yeah, pops, I did." your brother then handed the sack to your father, and proceeded to smile and place his hand on your head, ruffling your hair. "Now, didn't I promise a certain someone a day with her big brother?'

"Yep!" you responded, a smile appearing on your face. "And you better not bail! You still own me that rice ball!"

"Alright, I'll get you a rice ball."

Satisfied, you proceeded to walk out of the store, taking your brother's hand and dragging him along with you. "Come on nii-san! Lets explore the town today!"

You laughed, dragging B/N from stall to stall looking at all the things they had for sale. You didn't have any money to spend, but you were happy just being with your brother. He was always able to put you in a good mood.

"Wow, look at that, B/N," You said pointing to a dove that was made of wood. "How do you do that?"

"You take a knife and carve into the wood until it looks how you want it"

    "Wow"

You and B/N looked around for a little while longer before deciding to eat, and you finally got your long awaited rice ball. After you finished your lunch you continued to look around and converse with a few villagers.

They were simple talks, speaking about the weather or when the next shipment of items would be in at your father's store, but in the background you could hear more serious conversations that were spoken in hushed tones. Every time you asked about it, however, the people would simply say that it was of no concern to a little girl such as yourself. Even so, little snippets of their conversations reached your ears. Phrases and words such as 'come at night' and 'devil' caught your interest, but you soon dismissed it for superstition.

After a while, you found yourself watching the sun set on the outskirts of town with B/N. It was beautiful, oranges, reds, and yellows colliding together to make a single breath-taking scene. A smile graced your lips as you leaned against the wall of the building behind you.

You jumped slightly when you felt something being pressed against the palm of your hand. Looking up, you found your brother smiling down at you. Slowly you brought your hand up and looked at what he had placed there. It was the wooden dove that you had pointed out earlier. You opened up your mouth to protest, but was cut off.

"Take it," B/N interrupted, closing your hand around the object. " Let it be a reminder that, even when I'm gone, I'm still here with you, watching over you."

"You make it sound like you're dying," you sniffled. He seemed to be hell bent on making you cry.

"Naw, I don't plan on that little sis," he chuckled, pulling you into a hug. "I'm going to miss you"

"I'm going to miss you to, nii-san."

That moment was perfect. You wished that you could have simply stopped time. At that second you were completely and utterly happy.

    If only happiness couldn't shatter.
