"Why do you think she left you alive?" Lukas asked, sitting at the foot of the hospital bed and watched as the doctor snipped the surgical thread attracted to Alistair's head that was now holding together the split Lady Luck's gun ripped open when she knocked him out. He then dabbed the wound with a clean cloth to clean it, smeared on some disinfectant and then bandaged it with a square patch and medical wrap. Lukas frowned, worrying he'd have to wear that while Alistair had too, like the arm cast two years back he got during his first training sessions.
"Don't know, and I can't say if she saw my face either." Ali said and everyone in the room nodded gravely. Jean, Josh, Lukas and their mama all arrived at the labs when Alistair was reported missing. They sat in a well-stocked clinic to care for the heroes who worked there.
"Then we assume it's the reason she left you alive." Jean sighed and crossed her arms tiredly. The doctor wrote a few things down on the chart then left the room.
Alistair was laying in the alley for the rest of his patrol. When he didn't report in at the end of it, the city went on high alert. In the time it took to raise the alarm and for the cops to find Spirit, Sefarious took the opportunity and had his men make away with a few priceless jewels from a few jewelers and museums across the city. It was clear, they'd planned for this. It had been to coordinated not to have been. They wanted a stupid sidekick or hero-in-training to happen across them. It was why Miss. Fortune had been out by herself.
Bait, for the first moron to cross her path.
"I feel like such an idiot. My earpiece wasn't working, I should have backed off then." Alistair said quickly. No one argued with him.
"Sweetie, it'll be okay. Miss. Fortune will be found in no time and you'll be back on the streets doing what you do best." Their mother said as she took Ali's hand and smiled lovingly. Ali smiled back.
"Thanks mama."
"But you'll have no part in it. You're going to take some time off to let that head heal." She lectured sternly. Ali frowned and looked to Lukas for help.
Lukas met his brother's eye then turned to Jean. "If it means I don't have to wear that head wrap, does he have to stay home from school too?" He asked sincerely.
"No, he cannot take school off." Their mother was quick to respond.
"Good, cause it's woulda itched like hell and I'm not even the one that got cold cocked by a girl." Lukas smirked at his brother.
"It was a big fuckin' gun!" Ali argued and stuck his tongue out at Lukas.
"Language you two." She frowned at him.
"Well," Josh spoke up, "If his cover has been blown here, we can minimize the media coverage and hope it doesn't reach our new location. He can always change personas during the move so there will be fewer chances of people noticing."
"New location?" Alistair and Lukas both said at the exact same time.
"Yeah, I was approved to take over Mave's territory. We'll be starting Monday." Josh said with a big stupid grin. Lukas just wanted to punch him in the face. Monday... That was only two days away.
"But what about Sefarious? Are you just gonna let him continue to do whatever he wants?"
"Other heroes can finish what I started."
"But he opened shop on your watch, under your nose. We can't just let him run us out without even seeing him behind bars...even once." Lukas raised an eyebrow and looked at his brother in surprise. He didn't know that he could be so manipulative to others like that. Lukas always figured he was a special kind of pushover when it came to Alistair.
