(Danielle P.O.V)

I hurriedly rush into the shop, racing to the back as quick as possible. I tie my apron on, and fix my hair into a rushed ponytail. Rick walks into the back room, arms crossed. I let my arms sink in defeat.

"You're late." He says. I roll my eyes, moving past him. "My alarm didn't go off." I counter, heading to the bulletin board. I scroll down it with my eyes, checking on what needs feeding or whether or not I'm behind the counter today.

"Don't tell me you didn't see the puppies coming in." He teases. I lower my eyes at him, picking up the dog food container. "You might want to grab some gloves- it's a mess back there." He informs me. I grimace, doing as he says. "I better be payed double..." I mumble.

~3 hours later~

I sigh, hunched over the counter, waiting for someone to come in. Its been slow all day, surprisingly, considering it's the holidays. I perk up upon hearing the door chime, only to see Hayley walk in. She quickly catches sight of me, steadily heading over.

"Hey, not happy to see me?" She asks, sounding fake hurt. I shrug, standing up straighter. "Its just been slow today, you know?" I say. She looks around the empty shop blankly. "No, not really. I work at the mall, Danielle. Super crowded all day." She implies.

"And just what are you trying to say?" Rick butts in- quite rudely. She squints at him, an annoyed expression on her face. "I wasn't implying anything relating to your shop. Why does everything I say offend you?" She asks, voice raising.

For some reason, Rick has always been at odds with Hayley. She just came in one day, perky happy self, and he instantly thought she was trouble. No wonder this place is empty.

He glares at her. "I don't appreciate your assumption that 'everything you say offends me'. I just don't appreciate your company." He says. I roll my eyes. "Okay! We get it! You don't like her, and she doesn't understand you! You guys fight too much." I interfere. Rick just rolls his eyes, moving to a different part of the shop.

Hayley meets eyes with me again, smiling sheepishly as she hops up onto the counter. "If it makes you feel any better, I'll buy a puppy?" She offers. I shake my head. "You don't have to do that. That's not why I am upset. I should be. In a doctors office attending to patients. Not stuck in here. Right now, I guess my life is on hiatus." I explain.
