The loud banging at the door forced me to open my eyes. I groaned, burying my face into my pillow, before reluctantly stumbling to my feet. I slipped on my fuzzy slippers as I yawned. I turned my head to the clock on top of my small dresser. The digital clock flashed ten minutes past midnight. It was definitely past curfew, who could be knocking this late.

I turned to my roommate, who somehow managed to still be asleep through this noisy debacle. I crept towards the door, careful not to wake Seth. He was the most unpleasant guy without his full nine hours of sleep. I twisted the door handle ever so slightly and pulled the door open slowly.

However, what laid on the other side of the door, made my efforts to keep quiet seem pointless. "Happy birthday!" Jack yelled and immediately I shushed him. I slipped out of the room, clicking the door shut behind me.

He was standing in nothing but his pajamas and a hoodie, in the middle of the night, outside my room.

"What are you doing here?" I whisper shouted.

"It's your birthday, I wanted to be the first one to wish you happy birthday," I resisted the urge to roll my eyes at him. It was awfully sweet but also incredibly reckless, yet incredibly him. His room was on the other side of the hostel and if he'd gotten caught he might have been in massive trouble, not that he cared. In the two years I'd been friends with Jack I'd learnt that he wasn't one for rules. Which made us quite a pair, seeing that I could never break a rule, not on my own at least.

"Thank you," I said, "but you have to go, if you get caught by the monitors you'll be in detention for the whole week."

"I can't go yet, I haven't given you your present yet," he informed me, a mischievous glint in his eyes as a sneaky smile spread across his face.

"You didn't have to get me anything," I told him, "you know how I feel about my birthday." I'd already explained to him last year when my birthday had passed without his knowledge. He felt bad that he hadn't known and said he would have done something if he'd known. I told him it wasn't a big deal. That I didn't want to celebrate my birthday.

It had been my first birthday without my mother and I wasn't feeling particularly in a celebrating mood. I was glad the day had passed by fast and uneventful. I expected this year to be the same but apparently Jack had other ideas.

"I wanted to do something special, come on it's your birthday,"  he nudged my shoulder and gave me a pout. His blue eyes sparkled under the barely lit corridor. I huffed.

"Fine," I said, conceding to his whim, "what did you get me?" I asked curiously.

"Follow me," he said leading the way down the hall. I did as he commanded and followed him. We crept our way to the stairs, or at least I did, Jack seemed to not care if he was heard or not. We climbed the stairs all the way to the roof entrance.

"We're not supposed to be up here," I whispered to Jack as I nervously checked behind us, there was no one there.

"No one will know," he said as he tried to open the door, but it wouldn't barge.

"It's locked, we should probably get back," I said, then glanced behind us again, worried that someone would show up and catch us here. When I turned back Jack had the door wide open. "How'd you do that?" I asked.

"A magician never reveals his tricks," he said before chuckling, "come on." He walked out to the roof and I followed behind him.
