Long ago, deep within the underground, there lived monsters.
These monster once lived peacefully with the humans. However, that all changed when the humans went to war with the monsters. The humans won the war and they forced the monsters to live in the underground. And to insure the monsters will not try and return to the surface world, the humans created a barrier that prevented monsters from leaving the underground. Many monster tried to break the barrier, however none were able to even scratch it. The barrier could only be broken by human souls.
One day, a human child fell down into a hole within Mt. Ebott. The child fell down into the underground and was found by the Prince of the Monsters, Asriel Dreemurr.

Asriel felt compassion for the human child, knowing she didn't have any involvement with them being banished to the underground. He took her home and introduce her to his parents, the King and Queen of the Monsters, Asgore and Toriel Dreemurr.

Asgore and Toriel felt compassion for the child. The child told the royal family that she run away from her abusive family. The King and Queen felt compelled to allow this child to live with them as their adopted daughter since they can't find a way to open the barrier and she doesn't want to go back. Therefore the child was given the title Princess of the Monsters, Chara Dreemurr.
