Monday morning was a hot day. After breakfast, Cora was playing with her dolly. Jack had already left for work.
Cora heard a knock on the front door. Hoping it was Jack, Cora placed her doll down and ran to the door. She swung it open and felt her heart sink.
It was Lila and her mother.
Rose rushed from behind Cora.
"Mrs.Ethel, come in!" She said.
Mrs.Ethel and Lila walked in.
Lila walked over to Cora who was sitting on her bed.
"That's my doll." Lila said.
"It is not!" Cora replied.

Cora turned around and put her back towards her, and held on to her doll as tight as possible.

Lila tapped her on the shoulder. Cora turned around. "What?"
"Can we play!" Lila said.
Cora nodded her head.
"I brought my doll. Her name is Sara." Lila said, showing Cora a doll made of rags.
"She's nice." Cora said.

She couldn't wait for Lila to go back home.

They played for a while, separately of course, and then Rose announced that lunch was ready.

Cora ran to her seat, Lila right next to her on her left, Rose on her right, and Mrs.Ethel across the table from her.

After eating the baked potatoes for lunch, Mrs.Ethel said it was time for her to leave. Rose thanked her for coming, and they left.

Cora felt so relieved.

She decided to play outside with her dolly with Bridget, since they hadn't played together in a while.

After dinner with Jack, and after Cora had been tucked in bed to go to sleep, she heard Jack and Rose mummering something about jobs, but Cora was too drowsy to hear.
