The next day was the Labor Day picnic. Jack, Rose, Cora, Nellie and her sister's walked down to the park, about a block from their Tenement. School was starting the next day, and Cora was excited. The smell of fall was in the air, and leaves were already turning all types of pretty colors.
When they had reached the park, Rose spread out the quilt on the clean grass. She took out several sandwiches wrapped in clean paper.
They ate the sandwiches, and that was when a woman came up to them.
Cora recognized the women right away. Her name was Mrs.Boast. She and her husband were getting older, and Mrs.Boast couldn't have children. She had been looking into adopting for the past month.
Mrs.Boast smiled at Nellie and her sisters. Nellie introduces herself to Mrs.Boast, and so did Carrie. Jenny just looked at her with a nervous expression on her face, like she always did when meeting someone new.
Mrs.Boast talked to Nellie for a bit. Cora thought it was a bit strange at first. She asked her personal questions, like her age, and if she could work. Then Mrs.Boast talked to Rose.
After a while, Cora realized what was happening. Mrs.Boast wanted to adopt Nellie!
Cora found out that her prediction was true. Mrs.Boast did want to adopt Nellie, Carrie, and Jenny. She was overjoyed to know that Nellie might have a good home now.
