Mouse POV

"You're not really fit to be with a prince, are you?" I observed from where I was sat in a tree.

"And you're not really fit to be deciding who strangers should be with, are you?" the girl countered, glaring up at me.

"Sorry Princess," I joked, swinging off my branch and landing in front of her.

"You should be," She said, "And I'm no princess. Who even are you anyway?"

"The name's Mouse," I said, "I'm new here, used to be a soldier."

"Oh! I know who you are, didn't you cry on your first training day here, after you set yourself on fire?"

"You'd cry too if you thought you were burning alive," I huffed.

"I almost was burnt alive," the girl said, "And I didn't cry."

"It was my first day in a new place," I defended, "And it hurt!"

"No need to get so annoyed," the girl laughed, "I'm sure you're really quite brave."

"Bravest guy you'll ever meet," I nodded, laughing with her.

"I'm Dove," the girl said, taking the chance to introduce herself, "Nice to finally meet the bravest guy alive."

"Thank you Dove," I laughed, taking her hand and planting a small kiss on it, "Pleased to make your acquaintance. I apologise profusely for ever implying that you weren't fit to date a prince, I never realised I was speaking with the most beautiful girl in all the land."

"Hardly the most beautiful girl," Dove said, brushing off the compliment.

"Oh, how wrong you are!" I remarked jokingly, "Never in my life have I ever come across a girl with such a... such a... such a face-like face."

"What a compliment," Dove remarked, rolling her eyes, "But I think what you meant to say is that never in your life have you come across a girl."

"Maybe so, maybe so, but what I said still stands, your face is exactly how a face should look."

"Dove! Dove!" Rat called, running towards us, "I need to talk to you."

"What about? Are you okay?" Dove asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Rat sighed, "But something is happening and you need to know."

"Well tell me then, what is it?" Dove asked.

"I can't tell you here," Rat said, "Mouse, would you mind letting Dove come with me, it really is important."

"Of course," I said, "Take good care of her, Your Highness."

"I'm perfectly equipped to handle myself," Dove said, walking off with Rat.

"I'm sure you are," I said, walking down the trail.

We couldn't stray too far from the camp as we were always moving around, so everyone needed to be accounted for, really, no one should ever be travelling by themselves, but everyone seemed to be busy right now.

I sat down on the ground, somewhere close to the camp, close enough that I could still hear children running and laughing, people talking, and the world still having fun. I looked at the palm of my hand, willing the flames to appear like they had so many times before. I had been creating fire since before I got to this camp, since before I knew what all of this was.

My first time, the time I found out I could do this, was when I set a warehouse on fire, back with the blanks, the on that had gotten Rat into trouble. Since then I've learnt to control it, learnt to use it for what I want. The people at camp remarked on how fast I'd learnt, but none of them knew that I had been doing this for years.

"Cool trick," Someone said from the shadows.

I looked up to see Louis standing there, arms crossed, leaning against a tree.

"I remember you," I said, staring up at him, "You were the general in charge of my area, you let me have extra food one night. What are you doing here?"

"I'm fighting with you guys, for the revolution I suppose."

"For Rat, you're with him now, right?"

"W-With him?" Louis spluttered, "No – I mean, I don't know if he, maybe, I don't know... He's with Dove."

"I meant you were friends, like, as in you fight together," I chuckled.

"Yeah, that," Louis sighed, sitting down next to me.

"You're better at that fire thing than Rat, you know," He said, pointing at my hand, "He still burns himself sometimes, he's too afraid to use it."

"Yeah, well I've been doing it longer than him."

"You did it back at the camp?" Louis asked.

"Yup," I nodded.

"I'm surprised they didn't kill you, or move you up to a different zone."

"They never knew it was me, if I ever started a fire I made sure someone else always took the blame for it."

"You do know that kind of attitude won't get you anywhere here?" Louis asked, raising and eyebrow at me.

"I know that, but it's not like anyone here exactly cares about me either," I pointed out, "The people here barely know who I am."

"That's because you spend all your time here, waiting for something bad to happen so you can run again!"

I just huffed in response to that, he was technically right, but it was just annoying. He was the only general that I actually had some respect for back at the camp, but that was just because he treated us a little more like humans. That didn't mean that he was as perfect as he pretended to be here though.

"Okay, so maybe I've done some bad things!" I exclaimed, "But that doesn't mean your hands are clean either, you act so good and nice here and everyone seems to think you're amazing, especially Rat. But do they know what you did as a general, do they know about the people who died whilst you were in charge, the people you had sent to different zones, the people you had to hurt and abuse to earn your place. Or what your father did to you? Do they know that?"

"Don't talk about that!" Louis threatened, placing his hand on his sword, "Don't talk about my father!"

"Then maybe you shouldn't be questioning how I decide to live my life!" I seethed.

"I've gotta go," Louis said, standing up, "I have a trip to prepare for. If I find out that you've hurt anyone here or sold any of us out... I'll kill you myself."
