Dick Grayson sighed as he placed a checker piece on the board.
"Check mate." His voice dripped with boredom as he placed his head on the table.
"Young master Richard, are you alright?" Alfred as he walked over with a plate of cookies and a glass of milk.
"Yeah Al. I'm just really bored." Dick's expression grew a bit more chipper as he grabbed a cookie and drowned it in the creamy milk.
"Why don't you have a friend visit?" Alfred suggested, raising his eyebrow as Dick shoved his fourth cookie in his mouth.
"They're all busy." Dick replied, his mouth full of chocolate chip cookie crumbs.
"Wally? Roy? Miss Barbara?"
"Wally's at his Great Aunts funeral, Roy got punished because he disobeyed Ollie's direct orders, and Babs needs to finish an essay and go somewhere with her dad."
"Well, you shouldn't be cooped up inside on a beautiful day like this." Alfred took away the plate of cookies as Dick reached for his sixth, earning a frown from the young boy. "Why don't you go play outside."
Dick shrugged, hopped off his chair, and walked outside.
As soon as he was outside, the warm summer air brushed against his cheeks, and the clouds looks like fluffy cotton balls as they drifted across deep blue sky. A smile found its way to Dicks lips as he walked through the manors garden, the beautiful flowers were in full bloom.
"Hello?" came a voice from behind the towering metal fence. The peron sounded small and timid.
"Whose there?" Dick called.
"Your neighbor, Tim Drake. I live about a mile from here."
"Oh." Dick unlocked the gate and smiled at the child behind the fence.
"HI!" the boy looked about five years old, with light blue eyes and dark raven hair.
"Hey! I'm Dick. Do you're parents know you're out here?"
"No, they're not home. I told my housekeeper, Anna, I was going out to play."
"Okay..." Dick wasnt sure how to respond. "Do you want to play with me?"
"Sure!" Tim beamed as he walked through the gate.
"I dont really play with other kids..." Tim confessed. "I'm homeschooled and I don't have any friends."
"I'll be your friend. Do you know how to play tag?"
"Okay, thanks! And yes, I love tag!"
"Your it!" Dick tapped Tims arm and ran, sending the younger boy into a fit of giggles. after a while of tag, Dick told Tim about his life at the circus, and showed him some of his tricks.
"Wow! Can you teach me to do that?" Tim asked as Dick did a flip.
"Maybe some day." Dick smiled and looked at his watch.
"It's almost 5:00. You should probably go home for dinner."
"Thanks for playing with me today!" Tim said as he waved goodbye.
"No problem! Wanna come over tomorrow?"
"Yeah sure!"

That night, Dick told Bruce and Alfred about Tim.
"He's only about 5 years old, but he's fun! And he doesn't have any other friends, so I told him he could play with me."
"That's very kind of you chum." Bruce said as he shared a concerned look with Alfred. "Did his family know where he was?"
"He said he told his housekeeper, cause his family wasn't home. I feel bad for him, it must be sad to be all by yourself all the time. Hey, I always wanted a little brother! I can be there for him."
"Well I'm sure you two will become the best of friends." Alfred smiled gently.
