"... So," hesitance seeped into your tone even if you tried to conceal the nervousness you felt. You knew you had every right to be—since you're alone with someone you barely knew, and especially since you didn't have any funds to buy something from her cafe even if she basically just saved you from staying out in the rain—but you at least tried to make things casual as if you were speaking with an acquaintance. "Um. Nice place you've got going."
"Really?" you thought her eyes couldn't glow brighter, but you were immediately proven wrong. Upon your arrival at the counter, she removed her hand from your shoulder blade and took her place next to you with a wide smile. "Thank you. You're the first person to see it, actually."
"You were saying something about a soft opening," you recalled, hoping to keep the conversation going at this rhythm.
You didn't miss the somber look that briefly crossed her face at the two words you mentioned.
"Yeah, about that," she stifled an uncertain laughter, rubbing her left elbow. "The rain kinda ruined things for me. No one showed up."
Now that I think about it, you thought while simultaneously nodding in sympathy at the girl. I did see a few fliers around the convenience store. You also recalled how most of them were either covered by other advertisements or were rendered useless because of the rain that melted the words together in one indecipherable splotch of ink.
If you thought that the girl beside you wouldn't be able to bounce back from the gloomy conversation, you were once again proven otherwise.
"Hey," she grinned at you, eyes slightly narrowing with the movement of her cheeks. "Do you want to sample some from the menu?"
Your eyes widened at the offer, and you could feel your heart slowly descend to the pit of your stomach as you succumbed to your guilt.
"I don't have any money with me right now," you voiced out the regrets you felt, seeing the girl so thrilled at the notion of someone actually attending her soft opening. "I would, but—"
"That's good enough for me," she nudged your upper arm with her elbow before slithering her way behind the counter. "There's no pain in treating my first customer to some samples. Come on, they're fresh!"
You were feeling guilty, but the look she gave you—pleading yet teasing at the same time to the point that it would have been annoying if she hadn't saved you from the merciless rain—made the offer hard to refuse. Besides, the mouth-watering scent of freshly baked goods that wafted into the room when she opened the door to what looked like her supply room practically sealed the deal between her and your grumbling stomach. Ultimately, you nodded.
"Alright then—I guess I'll have a taste."
