The room was empty when you came in, save for a lone box atop the counter you frequented. Clearing your throat in case Arra was around, you let yourself in accompanied by the gentle ringing of chimes tied on the doorframe. You made your way to the counter, curiously lingering around the box. The top was see-through, and you take a peek inside.
Happiest Birthday, Hange Zoe.
The sentence was written in a handwritten cursive with plain white icing, beginning with controlled curls before gradually losing itself near the end. The letters Z, O, and E are messy, and your ears pick up the soft sounds of crying behind the counter.

a tribute oneshotThe epitome of happiness, the representation of jovial curiosities, and the personification of the way life should be lived—full of zest, animation, and everything in between. That is what HANGE ZOE is in your eyes—that is what you knew them to be.
The squad leader was a world that you thought you knew from the very start, like a boar roaming a forest it had already gone through tens of thousands of times since it was born. Yet as days pass they continue expanding—widening the horizons you yearn to explore, branches upon branches, veins upon veins, paths upon paths—without any indication of ever stopping.
The world they showed you, full of smiles that are always contagious. Boisterous cackles that are just as endearing as the softer, more quiet laughter shared in the dead of the night. The suppression of loud noises, always leading to lighthearted failure. The very sounds that gave Hange such colorful air about every movement they made. The loud mechanical tinkering in the middle of the room, the coos Sawney and Bean greedily accepted beneath the tent Moblit had declared them to be off-limits from (until they finally took a shower, they were always so stubborn), even the heavy sobs that left their lips the night the two giants were taken away from them. The notion of temporary joys, and the uncertainty that always came right beside them. Many things are temporary. Hange never stopped despite that, and you wish that they'd take some time to slow down and gaze at the stars with you.
