Virgil Addams let out a long, long sigh. He had been trapped in that room for what seemed like years, even if it was only a few hours. Any time at all was too much in his mind. He had never been a fan of these kinds of things. The fancy outfits, the awkward small talk, oh just kill him now! The whole thing set his nerves on edge. He'd had to put up with his fair share of potential suitors over the past few months. His mother had been highly insistent on all of them, but his father, god bless him, was not about to have his son married unhappily. He wasn't sure what it was that made them so unpleasant. After all, it's not like they were unpleasant people. Every one of them had been polite at least. Kind, Well Mannered, and respectable too. But they had all just been so..bland. It didn't really help matters that his mother had him practice his responses and what she referred to as the "proper courtship processes" before they came. Or that she also stationed people in the room to make sure he stuck to the script. How exactly was he supposed to actually connect with this person if they couldn't know anything real about him? His mother had claimed that Virgil would only scare them away, and therefore couldn't be trusted on his own. Personally, Virgil didn't much mind. If his mother wanted to help him avoid marriage, more power to her. He wasn't exactly comfortable sharing his life story with a stranger anyway. He did have to admit, Roman was pretty damn attractive. His tanner skin, wavy chestnut hair, and forest green eyes probably made him the favorite interest of a lot of the girls, and maybe even other people, in his kingdom. He also looked pretty well built. But other than having to suppress a laugh at the prince kicking his brother in the shin, they hadn't really made a connection. Oh well, it would be just like the other suitors. He would come, they would talk, he would leave. Virgil only had to get though that stupid ball tomorrow and he would be free for at least another week. Well actually, he would be free for a few hours that night anyway. He just had to wait till the rest of the castle was asleep.

10:00 o'clock was the curfew for the castle when guests were over. The lights of the castle went out, and the staff retired to their quarters. Around twenty minutes later, Virgil crept out of his room and across the hall, stopping at a door. He paused for a moment, looked around, and then knocked his usual pattern on the door. He held his breath, and a few minutes later, the door was opened and he was ushered in. "You ready to go?" Virgil asked, shouldering his bag. "Yeah, I'm ready, just give me a minute." This was a regular process for Virgil and Janus. Every other night, Virgil would show up at his brother's door with his things, and the two would climb out the balcony and slip out the gate. Janus had payed the night operator to leave it open and hand off the codes. He could be very persuasive. But as often as they'd done this, Virgil still got nervous every time. "Hey hurry up, there's no telling if one of those guests could be wandering around the castle and see us." Virgil muttered, fiddling with his hoodie strings. "Oh relax, we've done this plenty of times before." Janus replied over his shoulder as he shoved a hat into his bag. Virgil shot him a look. "Yeah well, you never know, so come on." Janus slipped his messenger bag over his shoulder and turned to face the shorter boy. "Yes, alright I'm ready. Do we have everything?" He asked. "Yeah I've made sure to double check. Now come on, we've got to leave time to change." Janus, who seemed to be used to his brother's constant worrying, simply nodded and moved over to the window. "Yes, I know. Now be careful climbing down." He stepped out onto the balcony and hit a switch, causing a latter to drop down. Virgil was still amazed every time he saw the contraption. He was glad for it too. He couldn't imagine what it would be like to climb out on a rope or something. The latter had been installed by Logan, Janus's boyfriend and Virgil's good friend, on one of the rare weekends their parents had been out of town. Janus had again had to sneak around and in some cases bribe a few castle attendants to look the other way, but nonetheless the latter was here. The boys descended off the steps, and slipped into the night.
