Dan's POV
I quickly walk up the field towards the cluster of trees, Phil wasn't in my last lesson so we planned to meet here to eat lunch together. There is something about these trees that allows me to feel safe, maybe it's how they surround me like a shield or just how no one else bothered to come this far down the field at lunch. To my surprise Phil is there already, sat against a tree with his bag open next to him. I sneak up behind the tree he is against before snaking my arms around it to cover his eyes. I feel him jump which makes me allow a chuckle to escape my lips "DAN! I hate you!" Phil laughs once I take my hands away and crouch beside him.
"No you don't!" I smile while sticking my tongue out at him. He shoves me over so I end up lying down on the ground "I definitely do!" His voice is soft and so is his gaze down upon me. I feel a blush fill my face as I push myself up to sit beside him "Well then...if you hate me I guess you aren't going to have any of my Malteasers!" I tease while pulling a pack of them out my backpack. Phil's eyes flicker down to the chocolate then up to my face "Oh look, suddenly I like you again!" He grins and pecks my lips softly.
We sit under the trees for the entire hour of our lunch-break just laughing, chatting and cuddling. The bell is going to go soon and I suddenly remember Phil's bruised jaw. I furrow my brow as my gaze turns from the ground to his face "Were you hit..?" My voice is an almost silent whisper but he turns his head when he hears me "P-pardon?" Phil says in a confused tone. I look at his bruise "What happened to your jaw...?"
He places two fingers over the bruise and shifts slightly where he is sat. "I..." his head turns so he looks away from me. "I fell over..that's honestly all...I just didn't want anyone thinking, um, something else had happened..." I search the boy's posture and reactions with my hazel eyes before finally pulling him close to my chest. My arms wrap around him protectively as I know, just by how he acted, this wasn't exactly the truth about his injury. I really want him to feel safe around me. I want him to feel like he can tell me anything.
Inside my brain it then clicks and I say gently into Phil's fluffy black hair "My parents aren't home tonight. Do you want to come over for a bit?" He sits up and looks into my eyes "A-are you sure...?" his voice is shaky and he takes hold of my hand. I smile reassuringly towards him and give a confident nod even though inside I am shitting myself. If my parents come home early and find Phil inside the house they will flip but I need him to feel totally comfortable around me. The bell rings loudly telling us to get to our final lesson of the day "Shall I meet you at the top gates?" I smile as we collect our things up. He nods and pulls his bag on his back "You bet!"
