Too far from Texas, The Entertainer, Wild Horses, Seven Six Five by heart-attack-harry
Courtney is another one of my favourites. I think the thing I love the most about her writing is her women protagonists. I must say Stacey from Too Far from Texas will always be really special to me. I don't know if it's because she's older but when I was reading, I often felt like there was a little bit of me in her. The subject of children also resonated with me and the struggle of getting older. All those subjects are not easy to write about but she did it with honesty and vulnerability which I really appreciated.
I couldn't do a review of her work without mentioning her incredible talent at writing smut. It's one thing to write a sex scene but when you can feel the emotions and almost feel shy because you literally feel like your in the room with them, that's something else!!
I'm very excited to continue reading Seven Six Five, it's been a little while since she updated but when you get a chapter you understand why you're being patient. Because it's worth it and everyone has a different pace. Keep going Courtney, you're incredibly talented. As for me, I'll keep praying for a sequel to TFFT. 😉
Q&A
What is the first book that made you cry?
I'm not sure about the very first, but ones I remember having an emotional impact on me are If I Stay by Gayle Forman and White Oleander by Janet Fitch. I believe they were both made into films, the latter which I did see, but it did not have the same impact. I do love books that make me cry. They're probably my favourite kinds of books, actually. Even Harry Potter made me cry.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
I hate to say it, but it exhausts me. I wish it had the opposite effect. I'm afraid I might try to put too much of myself into my stories that it emotionally drains me. Or it might be because I'm a perfectionist and very hard on myself.
If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Hmm, this is a difficult question because when I was "younger", way before Harry Styles came around, I wasn't really writing for an audience. I wrote for myself and maybe for friends to read. It wasn't really a fanfic "community". So I wasn't really looking for feedback. I suppose if I could tell the me who started writing her first Harry fic in 2015 anything, it would be to keep remembering this feeling you have now, and how excited you are to write something. Remember it years from now, because it's what will continue to fuel your inspiration when you want so badly to compare yourself and your writing to others'.
What's your favourite under-appreciated novel?
There's an amazing book series by Richard Paul Evans called The Walk. You can add this to my list of books that made me cry. It's incredible. I believe it's marketed as Christian fiction, but I have no recollection of how I came across it as I am not religious. I read it on my Kindle years ago, and I always thought it would make a wonderful movie or Netflix series. Who knows, maybe it has lol. I'm sort of behind.
As far as fan fiction...I would have to go with The Assistant by my friend @Hawker97. It's an AU where Harry is a lawyer. It's full of heartache and angst and humor, and I love it so much. I know some readers aren't into AUs, but I highly recommend it if you are. I've always liked AUs as long as the story is well-written. It doesn't always have to be the real Harry for me to enjoy it.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
Only one right now, Wild Horses. It's been on hold for a while, but I'm excited to get back to it. I never have anything unpublished. I'm too much of a narcissist for that lol.
