Prologue+Chapter 1

Prologue

~Third POV, Orchid~

A young pup padded out of a den, her grey fur shining silver in the midday light.

"Hey, Orchid!" another wolf pup's call caused her to turn around, "Whatcha doin'?" The pup slid out of the den beside Orchid, her white markings standing out against her brown fur.

"Well?" she pestered.

"Nothing." Orchid replied glumly, "Just sulking around. Shadow wouldn't let me go hunting with her." The pup circled Orchid, tail wagging.

"Yeah, Shadow never lets us do anything!" the pup went into a play-bow, "Wanna play?"

"No thank you, Haylo." Orchid sighed, "I don't feel like it." Orchid turned away and padded through the heart of camp.

'Maybe Shadow's back and she'll let me do hunting practice!' Orchid thought wistfully. But inside, she knew it wasn't true.

She looked around for Shadow. But she was nowhere to be found. Sadly, Orchid started towards the den once more. She slipped into the den and her eyes adjusted to the damp light.

She padded over to a small heap of moss and curled up, tail over her nose. She closed her eyes and waited for sleep to come. She didn't know when, but sleep eventually came and she welcomed it.

"Wake up!" someone was chanting, "Wake up!"

"What..?" Orchid opened her eyes to Haylo standing over her.

"Wake up! Sparrow's back!" the brown pup started towards the exit.

"She is?" Orchid leapt up, still half asleep. The two pups pushed past each other to get out of the den. When they tumbled out, a brown wolf and a white wolf were sitting in the clearing, chatting.

"Sparrow!" Haylo cried, bolting towards the brown one.

"Hi, pups!" Sparrow said, catching Haylo as she cannoned into her, "It's good to be back." Orchid snuggled close to Sparrow, small vines of purple flowers popping out of the ground around them.

"Orchid! They are beautiful!" Sparrow breathed, bending over to sniff one of the flowers.

The white wolf stood up, "I need to get these herbs into the den real quick. They need to get into the pool in the side tunnel before they wilt."

She grabbed a bundle of plants in her jaws and padded into the den. Orchid looked up at Sparrow. "So how are you two?" Sparrow asked, nuzzling Haylo, "I haven't seen you in, like, a moon!"

"We're good!" Haylo replied eagerly, "How was your adventure? Did you see other wolves? What happened?"

Sparrow laughed, "Okay, okay. I will tell you everything. So first, I set out to explore the unknown territory..."

Orchid listened to the story, her ears pricked. "This is so cool!" she whispered to Haylo, who was leaning towards Sparrow excitement sparkling in her gaze. Sparrow continued her story with Haylo and Orchid hanging onto each word.

"...And then, I returned after a long, hard and painful trip. I met Snowfox at the border and we came back here! The end!" Sparrow finished her story.

"That was so cool!" Haylo cried, leaping up.

"I know!" Orchid rolled over onto her back.

"I'm going to sniff around the camp and see if I can find my own adventure!" Haylo said, her ears pricked and her gaze distracted.
