Chapter 9

Poison Cooking

“Wowo-eee!” Bard shouts out loud. What is that dreadful smell? Finny, Maylene and Kazuya simultaneously shook their heads in protest against the devastating odor. It was sharp enough to set one’s nose to stinging and eyes to burning.

BURNING!

They had completely forgotten about Sakura. They all rushed in to the kitchen.

“Thank goodness it didn’t do much damage, “Kazuya looked all over the place. “You could have been hurt.”

She knew that wasting food’s very bad, but it was difficult not to get revenge when you’re still angry and the reason for it was still absent.

“What happened?” Bardroy finally asked.

“Yes, what happened?”

They all turned in unison to see Sebastian and Snake beside the door. Sakura ran towards Sebastian. “I wanted to cook your supper and now everything is ruined.” She sobbed dramatically.

Sebastian patted her soothingly in the back. “Now, now,” he crooned. “Perhaps Bard and the others can help make something out of it.”

The rigorously shaking of the Rosenburg’s head chef, Bardroy told him there was no hope, but Sakura crying her heart out touched him. He couldn’t stand there doing nothing without at least ease here disappointment.

“Don’t cry.” He said putting his arms on her shoulders. “Snake will bring the supper at the veranda. Would you like that?”

The smile on Sakura’s smudged face made Sebastian wonder that God might exist. Once he had Sakura helped Maylene arranging the dishes he quietly returned to his now chaotic kitchen.

The smoke had cleared and other than the blackened stove nothing seems further damaged. “What started it?” Sebastian asked.

Bard poked around in the spot. “Bloody hell if I know.”

“What’s that awful smell then?” Finny whispered to Snake.

“Sebastian-san’s dinner I suppose.” Snake answered.

“Are you sure? I’ve never known human food to smell like that before.”

Kazuya speared the burned beef steak and eggs off the frying pan and lifted it gingerly to his nose. The pungent odor brought tears to his eyes and he quickly dropped it back. “It’s your supper alright.”

Sebastian looked down at the chopped potatoes, carrots and chicken legs floating in a greenish water like substance that was supposed to be the soup for tonight. “She’ll be so hurt if we don’t eat some of it.”

Snake and the others knew that despite Sebastian’s sadistic nature, he is quite the gentleman but Kazuya had never known him to be overly concerned with a woman’s feelings before.

Sebastian took one spoonful and spit the soup across the table. “Blimey!” Daubing his mouth with a napkin. “This is the worst thing ever!”

Sakura couldn’t believe how easily the tears came. “You don’t like my cooking.” She said accusingly.

Sebastian stood and took her in his arms. He don’t mean to trample her feelings. After all, she tried so hard.

“I’m sorry.” He said as he held her close

She buried her face in his shirt. “And I spent the entire afternoon preparing it.” She sobbed.

“Now, now,” he crooned. Sebastian found himself that all he did that afternoon was to soothed Sakura’s trampled confidence and he didn’t find it troublesome instead he find himself enjoying it. “Sakura, we won’t enjoy the   evening if we all try eating your masterpiece so I suggest I will cook dinner because it is entirely my idea of inviting you. You might want to observe me so you’ll have the idea what uhm.. proper cooking is.”

“Really? You’re not angry I burned your kitchen?”

“Of course not. So will you accompany me do the supper or wait here with the others?”

“I’ll just wait here.”

The others were surprised how fast Sakura recovered but didn’t mind it further. Sebastian still ate all of Sakura’s soup and happily thanked her for doing it.

“Well… being hungry is the best seasoning.”

“Shut up Bard.”
