Three. The way she spoke.

Marcus put his head down and closed his eyes the next morning in his 1st period class. He sighed as multiple thoughts continued to race through his mind, going back and forth but managing to stay his main focus.

Those eyes... I hear her name and I see those eyes... They're just so... Blue, so soft and innocent... And her hair, it's so... Soft and voluminous... So sleek.. God, but I just do not like her...

He looked up from his desk to see that soft blonde hair flip ever so gracefully behind her shoulder. She turned to him and smiled sweetly. He blinked once... Twice... And looked away.

"She smiled at you. You are so concealed in your own world, Mark. Just get to know her."

"No... Everything about her just drives me nuts, every sight of her angers me. I can't get to know someone that I can't even stomach the thought of.. It's intoxicating the way her eyes just glisten and look the way they do." I said off the top of my mind.

"So, you're looking at her eyes, hm?" Ben raised one eyebrow with that cocky smirk acting like he knows everything about anything.

"No, I-" I choked. "They're just so blue how the hell can you miss them, man? And wipe that cheeky ass grin off your face before I slap it off. There's nothing to this."

"Mhmm, I hear you." Ben turned and chuckled to himself.

On my way to lunch, I was stopped mid-hallway.

"Hi, there!" Nicole squeaked. "I... Wanted to see how your day is going?" She sounded as if she asked me a question. She sounded unsure of what to say, but her eyes showed she wanted to talk.

"Oh, um... Good, I guess.. H-How about yours?" My heart rate increased a little bit.

"Good..." She lingered.

She has something she needs to tell me, that's obvious. You can see it in her worried blue eyes.

"How, um, how come you kind of avoid me?" She came out and spoke soft, her voice cracking. "I don't know you, but have I done something wrong?"

"I... I, well, uh.. Oh hey.. My friends, catch you later." I walked away nervously, my heart still racing.

It was... Kind of cute the way her voice cracked.. She sounded so scared to ask me that.

No, you idiot. You don't know what cute is. You used to like Leslie, that says something. Don't even think that about Nicole. She's not your type, she... Is annoying. And obnoxious. And.. And--

"You look like you've just seen a ghost." Joseph joked. "Did a cat catch your tongue? Or maybe it was just Nicole."

"Shut the fuck up. I'm not getting involved with this or her. Not a chance. I need to stick to my, um, priorities. I can't pay any more attention to her, Ben. It's giving me thoughts." My mind was nearly speaking for me at this point.

"Thoughts, huh. It sounds like you could be catching that virus." Rikki scoffed.

"What virus?"

"FEELINGS." The three guys shouted in my face.

"I don't even know her! That's NOT going to happen."

*****

Tap, tap. Once again, the light tapping on my shoulder in 6th period. I turned to look at Nicole. "You know, I'm having a little bit of trouble with this work.. Do you think you could help me?" She blinked twice with her long eyelashes and soft, voice.

Something about her voice just made my blood boil. "Um... W-What do you need help with..?" I asked hesitantly, scratching my hand.

"Problem number 6...
7(-13x+9)•-9(x-5) ... It's just so many numbers, how the hell do I solve for X?" She made this cute pout, and looked up at me with those captivating crystal blue eyes.

"Heh.. Well, first you have to distribute.. So 7•-13 = -91x and 7•9 = 63. -91x+63 is what we have so far. Are you following?"
I asked.

"Yes."

"Then -9(x-5) is easy, -9•x is -9x and what is -9•-5, Nicole?"

"Um, positive 45?"

"Good, so now what we have left is: -91x+63•-9x+45
Now pull out the liked terms."

"-91x and -9x are liked terms... And so are 63 and 45. So, -91x-9x is -100x and 63+45 is 108..." She worked.

"-100x and 108 both need to be divided by the coefficient. So divide them both by -100."

"But it's 108/-100 that doesn't seem right, Marcus."

"Just find a number they are both multiplied by, for example 2. 108/2=54
And -100/2=-50 . 54/-50 can still be divided by 2 so do that again."

"54/2=27 and -50/2=-25... 27/-25 is that possible?"

"Yeah. He said if it comes out to an improper fraction to just leave it as that answer." I smiled sincerely and gazed once more into her crystal blue eyes.

"Thank you so much. Maybe we could--"

"You're welcome." I interrupted nervously and turned back to my assignment.

I don't want to get too involved... I helped her with a math problem, that's not befriending her. I'm doing okay... But lord, those eyes... STOP! Marcus focus.

Marcus had a new thought across his mind. The way she sounded when she talked. When he truly listened she wasn't all that annoying at all. Her voice was soft, nurturing and every now and then it would crack. It drove him insane.

*****
After he had eaten dinner and gone to his room afterschool that day, he pulled out his phone and started a new conversation.

Me: Hey... I need to talk to you about Nicole. [Sent 6:32pm]

Ben: What do you want to know? c; [Received at 6:33pm]

Me: What is she really like? Since you know her and I don't want to... She seemed so annoying but today I actually payed attention to her voice. [Sent 6:35pm]

Ben: Well, she's really sweet. She's a little flirty, but she doesn't ask for all the attention she gets. She doesn't date anyone because everyone that likes her just wants her for her appearance and everyone knows it. Plus, she likes someone. But they are absolutely oblivious. She is so funny and sweet and she's fun to be around. But even through all of that unnecessary "hate" and isolation from her, you've got to admit, she has a nice body... [Received at 6:38pm]

I smiled at his text message. The only thing that crossed my mind was her voice, her hair, her eyes. That sweet and soothing voice that drew me in even more to those beautiful crystal blue marbles and that floral smelling, soft and luscious blonde hair. The least I could do is get her number right?

Me: Yeah, I'll admit she does. Do you have her number by any chance? [Sent at 6:40pm]

Ben: No, man. Sorry. [Received at 6:40pm]

I shut my phone off and pulled out my journal.

•Today I noticed how sweet her voice was. I never payed that close attention to it until she asked a nervous question, and I helped her with math...Her voice reminds me of an angel speaking quietly, softly. It sounds bubbly and elated, like her spirits have been lifted when she's happy. When she's nervous, it sounds shaky, she makes small stutters... In their own way, they're kind of cute. I just don't particularly want to get involved... She seems sweet, and she's, well, gorgeous, but I don't want anything to do with her. Oh well.. Night. -Marcus
