Alaric
I sniffed the air, desperately trying to find the source of the lavender, but it faded again as quickly as it came.
"Hey man, there you are," Nico said as he walked up to me.
"Julian got here a few minutes ago with Yiah and the new instructor you wanted to meet, let's grab a drink and go say hi," Nico said as he ordered two Old Fashioned cocktails and we wove through the crowd towards Julian.
"Looks like you guys started the party without me," I said nodding to the bottle of Japanese whiskey on the table near my brother.
"Yeah well, we couldn't wait all night until our fearless leader decided to grace us with his presence," Julian said as he elbowed me in the ribs.
"Yiah, you look beautiful as always. Have you been taking care of my brother since he's been in recovery?" I asked as I poured her some more whiskey.
"You know it," she replied with a wink.
"So where is this instructor I've been hearing so much about, you did remember to invite him to the party, didn't you, brother?" I asked impatiently, turning around looking for a new face in the crowd.
"Raya! I'm glad you made it back, it took me 10 minutes just to get to the cheese table. Who knew I would be fighting with tweens over the last of the smoked gouda?" Yiah said with a laugh.
"Yeah, I wanted to stay outside for a bit longer, but I ran out of whiskey. Could I get a refill please, Julian?" I heard a voice from behind me ask.
I've met everyone of importance from each pack throughout the years, and this voice was very unfamiliar. I turned around, "I'm sorry, did I just hear you call the Beta of the Elmwood Pack, by his first name?" I said with an obvious edge to my voice, "I would suggest that you learn some manners if you hope to meet your mate tonight in one piece."
"Yes, I did call him by his first name, his name is Julian, isn't it?" she took her glass of whiskey from Julian, and gave him a nod of thanks as she took a challenging step towards me, "I'm not here to find my mate, call me a nonconformist, but the sexist and patriarchal notion of needing a man to complete me isn't really my thing, and I don't appreciate your threatening tone, either."
Who the hell does this girl think she is speaking to an Alpha like that? Does she have some sort of death-wish? I smelled the faint scent of rain on a summer day, just like at the training facility, but the scent just seemed to make me angrier. I responded with a deep and pointed growl.
"Okay well maybe we all need to settle down a bit and talk this out and not cause a scene?" Julian said as he got in between me and the ill-mannered girl.
"Do you know this disrespectful woman, Julian? How could you allow her to speak to us so informally?" I inquired.
"Brother, this is Raya, she is the one who saved my life, and yes, she is a bit informal, but she's from Octavion City, where pack leadership does not exist. Raya, this is my brother, Alaric," he said as I loudly cleared my throat, "this is Alpha Alaric," he said as his eyes pleaded with me to back down, "you need to calm down, you know how pissed mom would get if you ruined her event," he whispered.
"Fine, what is she even doing here anyway? And where is that damn instructor? Nico, you said he would be here," I said in a harsh, but controlled tone.
Nico, Julian, and Yiah look at each other and Julian gives me a big grin. I see Raya raise her hand. "Why the hell are you raising your hand? Apparently you have no problem speaking your mind, while insulting thousands of years of the history of our people, including respecting an Alpha. What else could you possibly have to say?" I growled.
