Alaric

"Will you excuse me for a moment, please Elders?" I said as I headed towards the office door.

Why the fuck is Nico calling me now? "This better be important, Nico, I told you I would be in chambers with the Alpha leaders all morning."

"Of course, Alpha, but your brother and his men were attacked last night and there were casualties. Julian is fine, but Kain is dead and Caiden and Wayler are critically injured. Paxton called for backup and Ryker fled once the patrols got to them."

"You've got to be kidding me, Nico! I leave for two weeks and you get attacked? How the hell did this happen?" I screamed into the phone.

"We have no idea, we're looking into it now and I will let you know when I find something. Your brother was saved by..." there was static and I was having trouble hearing what Nico was saying, "...is a very gifted fighter and I plan to ask if...will stay on as a trainer for our new recruits."

"Fine, I'll leave right after my meeting with Elder Viktor. Set up a meeting with the new instructor so I can meet him. Will you be able to take care of the pack until I return?" I asked with urgency.

"Of course, Alpha. But you don't understand the person that saved your brother is a wo-" Nico tried to reply as the line went dead.

I shoved the phone into my pocket and growled. Service in the Sycamore Pack's territory was always spotty at best, but I had gotten the gist of it- my brother was attacked in the open and Ryker was still out there and from what I knew about him this was far from over.

"My sincerest apologies gentleman, but it seems as though I need to return home earlier than originally anticipated. We can continue talk of our alliances later on this week," I said, trying to keep an even tone.

"Of course, Alpha Alaric, we look forward to continuing our conversation and hope things are okay at home," the eldest Alpha stated as I walked towards the door.

At least my mother would be happy for me to come home from my trip early, despite the dire circumstances. I had been away for a few weeks on official pack business, but these dealings had become more of a nuisance than anything else. I needed to be at home with my pack, preparing for the war that would inevitably dawn on our doorstep very soon.

"Before you leave, we want to make sure what we discussed before was taken seriously," Elder Viktor continued, "You are nearing your 29th birthday without a mate or an heir, which is very unorthodox and quite frankly makes this council nervous. The council has agreed that if you do not mate by midnight on your 29th birthday we will be forced to put forth the coniunx uxorem where the elders will call upon the Moon Goddess to help us choose a mate for you. We need you to be as strong as possible to fight in this war and we cannot express enough the importance of solidifying a bond with your mate before the battle. We have discussed this with our packs and they have agreed to send additional eligible omegas to the ball this weekend to increase your chances. Do not disappoint us, Alaric, or we will be forced to take matters into our own hands," he threatened.

"We are fine without a mate, we don't need one to be strong, we've survived this long without one. How dare they threaten us," my wolf Atlas growled.

"I understand, Elder Viktor," I said bowing my head as I leave, trying my best not to punch my hand through the wall on my way out.

What the hell? I've been searching for my mate for so many years that I just gave up, so what was the point? It's not like I was depriving myself by waiting for marriage, it wasn't a secret that I've fallen into bed with quite a few of the girls from my pack.

I quickly packed and used my telecom to announce our immediate departure.
