It was late, none of us were used to being up this late on patrol.
"Hey Meya, stay awake," Bell the short, dark-skinned girl who was one of our scouts said into my intercom.
"I'm up!" It was so annoying to try to stay awake at this time, but it couldn't be helped. We had to catch this guy before he killed more people.
"Hey, any sign of suspicious people or whatnot?" Kitsun asked.
"All clear on my end," I responded.
"Sa-," Dagger said as his voice was cut off.
"Dagger? You okay?" Kitsun responded. However, there was no response as I felt my heart sink to point I questioned if it would fall out my ass or not.
"Shit!" I thought out loud as I took off sprinting to the area Grey was supposed to be. "How could he sneak up on Grey?! He has the best hearing, smell, and eyesight out of all of us." I got my wand ready, glowing both red and white as I lept to from building to building. I was coming in close to his location fast when I saw two black, featureless figures, attacking Dagger with flip and pocket knives. I aimed carefully so that I wouldn't accidentally hit my boyfriend.
"FUCK OFF YOU CUNTS!" I shouted as a barrage of orange icicles shot out of my wand at the three fighting in front of me. Dagger dodged out the way, but so did the two shadowed figures. The orange ice began to glow as they exploded. Grey came leaping out of the smoke in my direction. I wanted to be relieved that he was safe, but there was no time as without breaking stride or slowing down in the slightest, he scooped me up.
"Wh-what are you doing?! We need to catch them now!" I screamed at him as we blazed away from the two. His mouth began to move in response to my question, but no sound came out.
"Put me down! We can beat them! We HAVE to beat them!" Once again, his mouth moved to the same result, with no sound. That being said even without the sound, I could tell what he was saying due to him overemphasizing the shape of his mouth, forming the words no, we, and can't.
I looked behind us to see them chasing us down quickly, almost as if they weren't even going all out in there pursuit. It was clear that whoever these two were, they had no fear of us, even though we were among the most popular heroes in our state. One of the two threw a knife at us, it seemed to whistle through the air toward us at an incredible speed. Dagger changed direction in a heartbeat as the small blade flew by us. He kept running and eventually dived down into one of the many alleys. When I looked into his eye, I was frustrated, but when I looked at Grey, I could see it, he was terrified. As we kept running away from these two shadows, he took multiple quick turns down various allies.
It had been about ten minutes since he had jumped down before he stopped and set me down, extremely exhausted as he had just sprinted for the hope of escaping. The concerning aspect of this exhaustion was that there was still no sound coming from him as he panted. He looked at me in between breaths and moved his mouth again, this time telling me to run. I just shook my head no when I saw it. I quickly focused and made my staff give off a dim green glow and held it to his back. There was a clean but deep cut, which was bleeding slowly.
"What's happening!" I thought, "This ... this is insane. Why can't I hear him?" I took a moment to try and calm down and focus on what was important at this moment, healing Grey. I then took a deep breath and looked at the wound focusing my energy on the cut only to see that it wasn't healing. I then noticed something out of the corner of my eye. One of the two dark figures.
"Where is the other one," I thought before Grey quickly grabbed me and moved further down the ally. I closed my eyes tightly as he did. When I opened my eyes, I saw the other of the two shadows, with his hands on the hilt of a bowie knife which was stabbed into the ground right where we were sitting. I now knew that I couldn't beat them, that ... WE ... couldn't be them.
They somehow managed to dodge every one of our attacks, yet at the same time could easily hit us without us knowing. Suddenly, a massive wall of flames was sent from the top of the buildings we were stuck under, directly at the closer of the two shadows, but as expected, it dodged.
"Finally," we heard Kitsun, "who the exactly are these two?" Kitsun jumped down and looked at them. "You're the ass holes who hurt them aren't you?" His sword lit up the bright orange aside from the tip which began burning with a small white flame. However, as the light from the sword glowing expanding down the area, the two shadows seemed to disappear. The three of us then just looked at each other confused.
"What ... just happened?" Grey asked as I hugged him.
"We need to get back to our base and regroup," we heard Brad, the chubby white kid on the other side of our coms, "that's more than enough for tonight."
