It must have been around three in the morning when Sam's phone vibrated to wake her up. The eyes opened with difficulty, but it was necessary. Her parents would make a big deal if she left while they were awake. Sam gets up and goes to her bathroom to wash her face with water and do her hair. Then she goes to the next room to wake Danielle up. The little one was deeply asleep. Sam sighs and shakes her once. Twice. The call once. Twice. Go get a towel soaked in water and wring it on his face ... But nothing to do. "It's not the worst scenario that could have happened to me ..." thinks Sam, resigned to changing Danielle's clothes and taking her in her arms to return to her room. It only took a few minutes for her to put her bag on her back and place the leather satchel around Danielle's waist. Ready, Sam goes down the stairs and does not forget to leave the keys to the country house on the buffet at the entrance. All she takes with her is: food, water, her credit card, a first aid box and her laptop with the cable of course. The gothic looks at the interior of the house one last time before going out, closing the door behind her with her foot, she looks at the plain lit by the crescent moon. Danielle deeply asleep in her arms, headphones with music in her ears, Sam heads for the nearest town. It will take several long hours on foot, but no choice. She prefers to leave the car with her parents and take the paths through the flora and fauna.
Danielle growls lightly before waking up. She felt good, but for some reason she didn't know ... She was moving. Someone was holding her. She turns her head back, half awake, and watches Sam looking straight ahead, headphones in his ears. She had no make-up on and wore a black and purple cap on her head, her hair was in a ponytail at the clip of the cap.
"Sam? Where are we?" Asks the little one, in a sleepy voice.
"Hello Dani, did you sleep well?" She smiles.
"Yes, but ... where are we going?" She looks around.
"We are going to Abries. From there, I hope we will find a coach, shuttle, bus or someone hitchhiking to take us to Briançon." Explains gothic, stopping.
"We can see the city from here ..." she said looking at the horizon. "How long have you walked carrying me?" Sam reflects, looking at the time on his phone.
"I left around 3:30 am, it's almost seven o'clock." She nods and resumes her journey, casually. Danielle follows her, even taking her hand.
"You should have woken me up ... I must have been a burden ..." Danielle shakes hands, looking at the floor.
"The problem is, I couldn't wake you up." Laughs gently the goth.Sam's phone rings and answers, putting a finger to her mouth to tell Danielle to shut up. The little girl nods.
"Tucker, what are you doing up at this hour? What must it be ... Midnight around your house?"
"True, but you know me, I'm an insomniac." Laugh the geek. "Danny is sleeping like a rock though. He finally noticed that losing his ghost nature ... made him become human again." He sighs.
"Why are you calling me?"
"I wanted to know how it was going. After what happened last night with your parents ..."
"Everything is fine. I ran away." Laughs Sam. "I packed my bag, slept 2 hours and left in the middle of the night with Dani."
"You are serious. Is she okay? Where are you?"
"She is fine, she has just woken up. We are towards Abries, we are trying to reach Briançon to take the train to Grenoble. Then, we will take a flight to Paris for another to New York." Explains Sam. Danielle looks at her, intrigued. "He's a friend, he's going to help us reach your father."
"My dad? Is he with him? Can I talk to him?" The young girl gets excited.
"He's sleeping for now, we'll call back tonight, it's dark over there."
"Alright ..." she said disappointed.
"But don't worry, he can't wait to see you again."
"And to meet you." Cough Tucker.
"As soon as I get there, you better run away." Sam threatens, before hanging up and sighing. "We should be arriving in Abries in an hour's walk, I think. Can you wait before you eat?"
"Yes !"As expected, the duo arrived in town. They land on a small wall and eat. Of course Danielle is the one who eats the most and her ogre appetite is not satisfied. Sam smiles and promises to take her something to eat on the way. Luckily, not far from what appears to be a tourist office, there is a bus. Small, but a bus nonetheless. The duo approach it and ask the driver for information. Small downside: the language barrier.
"Heum... Bonjour ? Est-ce... je... How can I say it..." Sam was never really good at learning French ironically.
"Bonjour monsieur. Nous voudrions des renseignements." Speak Danielle, as if nothing had happened.
"Bonjour ma petite, que veux-tu savoir ?" Ask the man. Danielle looks at Sam and she understood.
"It is a shuttle bus for Briançon ?"
"Est-ce une navette pour aller à Briançon, à tout hasard ?" Translated Danielle.
"Oh oui, je passe par Guillestre puis je prends la nationale jusqu'à Briançon. Pour le tarif, je prends 15€ par passager tout âge confondu."Danielle nods and translates to Sam who takes out his credit card. "Par contre, je ne prends que de l'espèce, il y a un guichet pour retirer à la poste là-bas." Show the driver a cash machine. "Je pars dans une heure, prenez votre temps les filles."
"Merci beaucoup monsieur !" Smiles Danielle.Danielle explains the situation to Sam and understands. She is amazed. How does Danielle know how to speak French so well? She is five years old, a half-ghost, a princess of her kind and can speak several languages fluently. Sam is going to withdraw some money and go buy food at the local grocery store. Sam was sitting on the step of the bus stairs as Danielle happily ate her whole cake.
"How do you know how to speak French so well? Even I who have studied for 5 years and come here every year ..." Questions Sam.
"It's thanks to the ghosts. There are ghosts of all places!" She swallows her mouthful. "But when I was created, apparently, I would have been improved by the addition of my original." She resumed her tasting.
"So you make it easier to learn things. Like languages." Sam concluded, stunned.Danielle finishes her cake and the two get on board. Sam pays for the tickets and waits half an hour for the bus to start. The journey lasted a little over an hour and once in Briançon Danielle asked the direction of the station before guiding Sam there. But on the way, they were told that they had to go to the Porte de l 'Europe to take the LER35 which is a bus line connecting Briançon and Grenoble. It was a much shorter and simpler journey than bothering with the SNCF and its often present delays. However, the next bus departure is at 12:45pm and it is only 10am. So the girls visited the city, made some purchases to occupy themselves in the bus and especially took something to eat. Because the trip would last more than three hours so it was better to fill the stomach of the princess before. "Thank goodness my parents are rich." Once the stomach is full and the bus tickets purchased, they get on board and settle in for the long three hours. Sam lent Danielle her computer who was watching a movie and Sam was busy with a newly purchased book. Ironically ? The film viewed is the adaptation of the book in Sam's Hands.
In the end, after more than 13 hours of travel for Sam, they finally arrive in Grenoble. Preferably, they take a hotel room, a large bed with all-you-can-eat breakfast and for dinner? Sam saw fit to introduce the little one to local specialties and a bit of history.
