THE GENIUS OF OUR GENERATION
A case study.Yoongi is six when his mother's close friend gets married, and seeing that their entire family is invited, he has to go too. Honestly, during that time, he only went because he had never gone to one, and considering that experience is knowledge, and knowledge is power, he has to go.
Weddings, Yoongi soon discovers, are interesting for ten minutes, then just straight-up boring for the remaining hours. Okay, he's a bit overcritical-- weddings are mildly interesting at best, and that is him being nice. The grownups are boring, the children are too loud, and there's nothing of value for him; Yoongi, even as a child, can tell that marriage is a big deal to everyone, especially the ones who are getting married. Why that is he isn't completely sure yet, because it seems extremely lame to celebrate that you are now legally paying your taxes together.
But okay, he lets ordinary people have their fun. It's just nothing for him, it seems.
It's no surprise that Yoongi grows up lonely.
He gets bullied and gets labelled as an outcast. Simply by the association of that, his classmates stay away from him.
The lack of friends doesn't really bother him and he doesn't see it as a problem, but seeing that he has extremely caring parents, they make it a problem for him. At first, Yoongi vehemently disagrees with making it such a big issue, sending him to different people with degrees and big egos ("They know what they're talking about, Yoongi," his mother would say. "Okay, and so do I!" Yoongi would retort.) and finding out why he is like this, but because the universe loves to prove Yoongi wrong, it turns out there is something "wrong" with him.
He's a genius, and extremely apathetic towards others.
At first, there are mentions about ADHD, then anti-social disorder, but in the end, they simply settle for Asperger's syndrome. Yoongi is eight when his mother tells him that you're different, and he doesn't care then, and refrains from caring when he gets older, too.
Of course, when he's about thirteen years old, he does some decent research on the matter, and turns out the people diagnosing weren't that far off; the symptoms and behavioural patterns that he exhibits seem to match.
The problem with Min Yoongi is that doesn't sleep when he gets obsessed about something until he's done with it, turns completely apathetic after his "high", and if he can't find anything else to focus on quickly enough, he starts trashing his surroundings, or create unnecessary problems for himself, such as getting addicted to sniffing glue.
Good for them, Yoongi thinks, at least they were doing their jobs and leaves it at that.
He doesn't have to take any medication, so he doesn't care.
However, Asperger's or not, Yoongi is still a genius, and everyone seems to hate him for it. He finishes elementary school early, then high school, then university, and now he's a genius living with his parents and without a stable income.
Yoongi knows he can get whatever job he wants if he just puts his mind to it; countless people ranging from his parents to his high school teachers have hammered that into his brains at this point, thank you very much.
The thing is, that Yoongi doesn't really have a sense of pride, so to speak. Of course, he isn't some kind of robot-- he has extreme emotional outbursts every now and then, not speaking to anyone for two weeks straight, and he can be obsessive at times when he does get interested in something, but inevitably drops it a while later.
