We were all sprawled out in the comfortable shed that served as our hideout. The many beanbags and nooks we liked were occupied by the five of us and our stuff.
"Ali! One week until Summer Vaca!" Jaxon, dubbed Jax, said to me.
I nodded from my perch in a green beanbag.
"Hey, how are your grades, Jax?" Natalie, whom I nicknamed Nat for the sake of it, asked him.
He groaned, falling back on his beanbag with a softened 'plop'. "Thanks, Mom. Just what I needed to hear as I was rejoicing in being free from that hellish place!"
Nat shrugged, her long black hair moving with her shoulders. "Not your mother and not my fault that you never went to any of the study sessions I offered you."
His head popped up again. "Excuse me for not wanting to be tortured for a couple hours, learning Latin stems that I will never use again!" He attempted to defend himself.
Dexter, who wasn't called that but Dex instead, chose that moment to step in. "Guys, you two need to chill. One more week of school and then two blissful months of summer." He had a way of being the peacekeeper even though he sometimes lost his temper.
I could remember when he would have to separate me and someone that ticked me off at school so I wouldn't fight them. That's what normally happened if I lost my temper because of someone.
Jax and Nat seemed to have calmed down a bit and just resorted to glaring at each other.
Nathan, the last of our numbers and the only member that I had no nickname for was watching the scene play out, having not talked saved him for the time being. He pushed up his glasses with his pointer finger and sighed. He looked at me, wanting to call the meeting to order as I was the ringleader of the Lost Boy Society, or LBS for short, as that is what we named ourselves. That's why our hideout was the Neverland Hideout.
I cleared my throat and everyone paid attention to me, either by looking at me or just stopping what they were previously doing. "The meeting has started."
Nathan then handed me a small notebook no larger than my hand from off one of the mini shelves we had constructed- nope, scratch that- one of the shelves that Dex had constructed.
Along with being the peacemaker, he was also the builder of the group. Pretty good deal if you ask me.
Anyways, I flipped to the last page that had been written on and read the writing aloud. "It says, 'Commenced meeting, vouched for the last meeting, made plans for Jax's party, old news/new news'." I paused for a moment and then asked, "Will anyone vouch for that?"
Nat raised her hand and then Nathan seconded her vouch.
I scribbled down notes on an empty page and then looked back up at them. "Ok. So, announcements. I don't see any new and upcoming events that need mentioning other than Nat's 15th birthday, so consider it announced." I grinned at her. "Happy Birthday, Nat."
She grinned right back at me. "Thanks, Ali."
The other three said similar things to mine. After they were finished, I asked if there was any new news. To this, they all shook their heads no. The reaction was the same when I asked them about any old news.
I jotted this down as I was supposed to and closed the notebook, and handed it back to Nathan who put it back on the shelf.
We all stood up and went to the back of the Hideout where there was a doorway covered with a dark green blanket hammered in place. We each went through, moving the blanket aside, revealing the outside. After exiting the Neverland Hideout, we walked for a bit through the trees that covered the ground behind the hideout. We then got to a tree whose roots formed an odd ring in front of it.
It was a portal.
Nat tried to enter it this time but it still didn't allow anyone in. It was just like how it was since the day we were forcible "thrown out" of the world we were in when we went through the portal. The portal 'closed', I guess, if that's how you want to word it.
We had stumbled upon it accidentally.
Jax and I were walking through the "woods" (that was its unofficial name) trying to find large sticks to make a tent with, as that was what the Lost Boys had decided to do with that rarely free weekend (the tent failed terribly because none of us knew what we were doing) and he happened to find a tangle of roots. When he placed his sticks in the pocket, they disappeared. He then showed me this which then made me show the rest of the gang.
Jax, of course, being the completely reckless idiot he is decided to try and go through the portal himself. When he disappeared, we all panicked and went through after him. We through many times after that and dubbed the place "the spot".
Ever since it knocked us out of the world, we would check it to see if we could get back in but, alas, no prevail.
We sighed as we walked back to the Hideout.
Once we got back in our seats and were comfortable, I passed around the tray of assorted cookies that my dad had left me before going on his two-day long business trip. When it got back to me, I took the last lemon-vanilla. Rather that then a blasted sugar cookie. Talk about disgusting. Yuck!
As we munched, we also talked.
I know. Talking with your mouth full of cookie. Such a sin.
Anyways, we made plans for the future, like making Nat a cake for her birthday and scheduling a water balloon fight. All of this would be, of course, after school ended.
Suddenly, the room was filled with 4 different text alerts from the member's phones. Dinnertime.
"Ack, sorry. Gotta split," Jax was the first one to say anything.
I nodded, "See ya."
The rest chimed in with apologies for needing to go to dinner and finish up the last bit of homework they had..err..more like Jax needed to finish his homework. The rest of us had it done already.
I waved to each of them as they left. "Bye," I said to Nat, who left last.
After everyone was gone, I put the tray aside, grabbed a key, and locked up the shed as I left. I then got on my skateboard and headed home. To a large house that was practically devoid of humans other than the maid and housekeeper whom I rarely saw.
Not that it bothered me.
Much.
