In this city ,near Shyambazar , Roy family stays . Gourab Roy ,,the head of the family stays with his wife Mrs Roy and his son Goutom Roy and his wife Hiya Roy.
It was a night of January. The date is 10th January. The Landline rang in Roy house. Gourab Roy picked up the call.
Gourab: Ke bolchen? (Who is speaking?)
The person : Baba ,(Father)
Gourab : Oh Goutom ....bol ki hoeche? Kemon achis tora? (Tell me what it is? How are you?)
Goutom : Valo achi Baba...Tomake ekta valo khobor deoar chilo. Aj bikele Amder ek sontan hoeche (We are good Father....I have to give you some good news. Today afternoon, We had a child.)
Gourab : Ok... ta chele nah meye? ( Ok...then, is it a boy or a girl?)
Goutom : Baba...asole...umm...Meye hoeche.(Father...actually...umm...It's a girl)
Gourab : Ok...Rakhchi ekhn. (I am hanging up then.)
Goutom heard the line got dead.
He looked at his wife who was asking him about her in-laws reaction. He shook his head and Hiya's smile faded.
It was disappointing for them because Goutom's family didn't accept the child. It was visible in Gourab's attitude.
They have orthodox mentality . They believe that only a boy can be the person who can bear the family name for the next generation.
Whereas, Hiya's maternal family accepted the new born wholeheartedly.
Her parents saw their babygirl and fell in love with her. They kept her name Jhilam Roy.
For the next six months, she stayed with her mother in her mama bari (Maternal uncle's house) where her grandparents and Maternal uncle were.
Her father left the house in search of his job as his previous factory where he worked was being shut down.He stayed with them during weekends and spent quality time with Jhilam.
After 6 months ,they went back to Roy house despite the objection of Hiya's father and brother as they knew her in-laws will not accept little Jhilam. They went back as Gourab wanted his son and daughter in law to come back to their house with their baby.
They entered the Roy house.Seeing the baby ,a displeased expression covered all over the faces of Gourab and his wife. In Fact they didn't try to take the baby in their embrace.
Day started to pass like this .
Everyday Gourab and His wife quarrelled with Hiya targetting little Jhilam. The reasons were very petty. If Jhilam cried over something or tried to touch something from her grandparent's room or if she wanted to get close to them ...they started to quarrel with and badmouth Hiya.
Goutom was aware of all these despite staying outside most of the time .
Oneday Hiya was boiling some milk to feed little Jhilam as she was being fuzzy about everything as she had fever.
Her mother-in-law came and ordered her to make tiffin for them as they are hungry. Hiya told them that she will make food after feeding as she is very hungry and didn't have anything since morning. But her mother in law turned her deaf ears towards Hiya. Though she and her husband had food just an hour ago still they did this because they wanted to make the baby suffer.
It was then they crossed the limit. Hiya started to argue with them as her heart pained seeing her child suffer . She was tired of every torture which she and her daughter bore in this three months after coming back from her maternal house.
That night after Goutom came home, they had a huge argument over it. Finally Gourab said ,"I think you guys should move out of our house. From the time you came with your daughter. ..all the problem has started. I am not blaming anyone but I think if you move out then all the problems will be solved . We all can stay happy the way we want."
Hearing this Goutom and Hiya got shocked. They didn't expect that he will throw them out of their house like this and neglect their own granddaughter like this.
They didn't wait for a second and moved out from saying that they will not come back here again.
With their 9 months old little Jhilam ,Goutom and Hiya started their journey towards Hiya's maternal house.
They reached their and Hiya's mother welcomed them. Her grandfather said, "Ami bolechilam jas nah. Tora chinta koris nah, ei bari toder o. Ay vetore ay.. (I told you don't go. Don't worry, this is your house as well. Welcome home.)" They entered.
They started to live once again in this house. Little Jhilam started to grow up. She wrapped everyone around her little finger...especially her grandmother (Nani maa).
Her father ,Goutom started working mechanic shop nearby and side by side he worked as security guard as well. He wanted to earn money so that he could see smile in the faces of his family. Sunday was the only day when he could spend his time with Jhilam and Hiya.
After working hard for one year, luckily he got a stable job in a Grocery shop in a supermarket and started to earn a little more money than his previous jobs. When he was assured that he was a permanent employee there , he left the job of mechanic and security guard.
Jhilam was very happy as she got love from everyone. Seeing her smile, Hiya also got satisfied . They are somehow stable now.
Like this she turned three and in this three years, she developed an attachment with her maternal family. They were her people whom she can a call family.
But as we say , after happiness ,it comes time for sadness to play its role and without struggle ,human life is incomplete.
The hardest struggle of Jhilam and her parents started from here.
Here is the first chapter.
Stay safe and healthy.
