"So where are we going?" Max asked once I picked him up. Instead of answering all I did was wait for him to close the door, then I turned up the music and pulled out of his driveway. Rain started coming down.

"Jesus, Ryan. You're going twenty over the speed limit." I pressed my foot harder to the gas pedal and looked him in the eyes.

"Got it. No talking right now," he put his feet up. "You better know where you're going." I sped onto the highway and headed straight down the 408, I couldn't leave the state fast enough. The roads were slick and there was one more county we had to go through to get out though. Problem was that the sun would set before we could get all the way through.

Max told his uncle we were taking a weekend vacation and he gave Max the keys to his lakeside house. Following the directions we printed out, I pulled off the 408 and headed off toward the lake. Pulling into the gravel driveway, I focused on the sound of crunching gravel as my stomach twisted into knots. I felt like crying, and I didn't even know why. I woke up Max, it was only about 7:30, I've got no clue how he's already asleep. Max could sleep through the third world war.

As I turned on the lights, the generator hummed. I left my bags in the car and just brought in stuff for the night. I figured we would only stay here to sleep then get the hell out. Max was on the dock already, and the sliding door was wide open. I walked out to the edge of the dock then stopped, watching him from behind, listening to the water lapping softly.

"It's getting late," Max said softly without turning around.

"Never stopped us before," I said, buying time out in the calm. Max turned around and looked at me sadly. I walked up next to him and looked out at the lake with him. He just kept looking down at me. He reached down and started to slide my sleeve up, I let him. He stopped at my elbow and stared at my cuts - he looked like a lost puppy - I started to pull away. He held his grip for a second longer then let go, turning around and heading inside.
