S A N T A N A  D I D  N O T return home that night, or the following few for that matter. It had been weeks since they saw each other, and it was taking a toll on them. The next time she saw Paul was the night the Cullens finally decided to feed. Carlisle wanted to be strong and well fed before Bella gave birth so he could be at his best ability. Santana was safe in the woods, she didn't need to hide. It was a small comfort to know that she could live freely without fear of being destroyed. The Cullens used her as an advantage, using her as a shield against the wolves. They knew if she stood between them, the wolves could not act. Sam was angry, ready to violate the law. Sam wasn't even quite sure she fell under the rule as she was a vampire, but for Paul's sake, he abided, and told everyone else to as well.

Of course, none of the other wolves would dare touch her anyway. She was still family, despite her transition. They were less angry with her, and more angry towards Jake, Leah and Seth. Santana didn't choose to become what she was, but the three wolves intentionally split from their pack to make their own. Leah was less enthusiastic about being close to the vampires. Her morals were only about protecting her brother and escaping Sam's rule. She was a bit more selfish in the matter, but she was appreciated nonetheless. Esme still made her food, opened her house to her, and thanked her. They all appreciated anyone who took their side or helped their cause.

The woods were dark and to a human eye almost unnavigable, but for the vampires it was easier than looking at a detailed map of the forest. They were so comfortable in it now that it was second nature to them. Santana was still trying to find comfort in feeding off animals. It wasn't as rich or fulfilling as human blood, but it was enough to keep her going. That, and knowing that if she turned 'vegetarian' she would be able to live a life as close to human as possible. It kept her friends and family around and it turned her more human and compassionate.

Esme caught sight of a deer and changed her course, barreling towards it. Santana followed her, Emmett close by. They were the protection squad for Carlisle and Esme. Emmett was the strongest, and Santana was protected by law. It was the perfect duo to keep the hunters safe. Though Jacob was still nervous about Santana going out; he was unsure if Sam would abide by law considering the situation. Sam wasn't too fond of the treaty or any of the rules as of recent. Jake thought Tana was too trusting of the process. Times were different now and things were unsafe for everyone.

Esme went for the leap on the animal, but Santana heard a branch crack in the distance. She shared a quick look with Emmett and leaped in front of Esme. In the middle of the air, she collided with a large figure, flinging her away from Esme. Santana landed with a thud on the ground and grunted. She jumped back up, charging back over to the snarling wolf. The animal and the girl paused when they caught a good look at each other. The wolf was Paul, and as she noticed her face softened. His angry tone diminished slightly, and a minuscule whimper came from him.

"Paul, don't do this." She whispered. The roadblock gave Esme time to feed and move on, now it was just Tana and Paul in the clearing. He didn't make a noise, but he didn't break eye contact. "Change back so we can talk." She said, reaching out for him. He flinched away, causing a stab in her chest. After a moment, he abided.

He stood before her, back in human form. It was the first time they stood face to face in a while. "I can't stay long. Sam gave me orders."

"Aren't I more important than Sam?" She asked, hurt feigning her tone. He chose not to respond right away, but took a step towards her.

"Yes, you are. But he is the pack leader. He controls everything." He said.

"I'm your family, Paul."
