Beep beep beep beep!
I turned my head towards the clock as the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Behind me, I heard Joe give a 'whoop!' of excitment. I pushed my notebook into my bag before turning to face him and Ryoko.
The taller girl got to her feet and smiled. "So, how's it going, new group? What's our plan?" she asked with enthusasim.
"Food. Whatever we do, there should be food. I'm starving!" I smiled at Joe's response.
"Food does sound like a good idea. What if we met up at the Café on First Street?" Ryoko and Joe looked at each other. They then turned back to me, both giving matching thumbs up with a wide smile.
Joe was the first of them to speak. "Sounds great!"
Ryoko nodded in agreement. "We should bring our notebooks and laptops so that we actually get some work done. And our books of course."
I noticed Joe frown a bit. "Hey uhm, I've got a confession to make. I didn't read any of the book."
"That's fineee," Ryoko said, waving her hand to illustrate her point. "Anyways, see you guys after school then!"
We all said our good byes and exited the classroom, heading our seperate ways. As soon as Joe and Ryoko were out of earshot, I let out a long sigh. I felt really awkward being in a group with them. Both Joe and Ryoko are such great friends and then there's me. Sure, I know both of them and they're really extroverted, friendly people, but.. Well.. I'm not. I try my best to be nice to people and I have plenty of acquaintances who seem to like me, (some of them even adore me. It's a little creepy) but I don't have any good friends.
I shook my head in order to clear my thoughts. It'll be fun, I attempted to convince myself.

I slung my bag over my shoulder, thankful for the gentle breeze outside. I began walking outside of the school's courtyard. The streets were alive with students and people alike, all buzzing around. I took a deep breath in. It was always easy for me to ignore chatter and focus on the task ahead. I've seen plenty of people online complain about their short attention-spans and inability to focus on their goals, but that had never been a problem for me.
Soon enough, I found my feet coming to the Café door. I placed my hand on it and pushed. Almost immeditaly, two shouts met my ears.
"HEY, SARA!" Ryoko and Joe yelled in unison. I gave an awkward smile. Moving my bag from my shoulder to the table, I took a seat at the four-person table the two were sitting at.
Joe was already shoveling ice cream into his mouth. Ryoko laughed at him, taking an occasional bite of cake. I decided to order an iced tea.
"Man, this ice cream is freaking awesome!"
Ryoko giggled at her brown-haired friend. "That's real cute, Joe."
"Huh? Yeah, I know I am." Joe stuck out his tongue, pressing in on his cheeks with his pointer fingers in order to illustrate his point. It was pretty cute, I thought, sipping my tea.
I quietly cleared my throat. "Anyways, we should probably get to work now. How about we start with the overall summary?" Ryoko nodded in agreement.
"Sure!" I pulled out some papers and began to talk with the other girl. Joe tried to offer information whenever he could, but he wasn't much of a help. Eventually, he gave up and decided to give funny remarks here and there. I laughed at his jokes, but as we continued to work, I couldn't help but notice how Ryoko kept getting closer to him and making sure to laugh extra hard at his jokes.
It's not like I was trying to notice or anything. I just did. I attempted to ignore it, finding the hurt in my stomach whenever I noticed it uncomfortable.
I gave my knee a light tap with my finger. We were finally beginning to wrap up. "So, see you guys at school tomorrow?" Joe asked, springing to his feet.
Ryoko and I both hummed. The three of us then parted ways, continuing our journey to the days ahead of us.
