"Would you hurry up, Mattsun? I didn't come here just to have a staring contest with your haunted paintings while you rummage through your disorganized spells!"
Issei's eye twitched at the whine that echoed from the other room, and he resisted the urge to stomp back in there and throw Oikawa out the window. Instead he continued to leaf through one of his spellbooks, scanning the pages for a summoning spell. "Oh, by all means then, Oikawa," he called out. "If you want to be that impatient to a friend that graciously invited you into his home at two thirty five in the morning, even though he could be sleeping, then the door is right there. And they aren't haunted, they just have a mind of their own."
Even with the walls between them, Oikawa's bark of laughter wasn't that hard to hear. "Oh please, Mattsun, you're bluffing. If you really wanted to get rid of me, you would have turned me into a cat and left me in the woods so the wolves would eat me."
Issei chuckled quietly to himself before raising his voice again. "I'm still thinking about it, you better watch yourself!"
"Bring it on!"
Issei shook his head, silently wondering why even after all these years he stayed in touch with Oikawa. He hummed thoughtfully as he stopped in his searching, regarding the contents of a page. Maybe it was their childhood friendship, maybe it was their complicated relationship as of now. Or maybe it was something else. He honestly didn't know. Shaking his head to rid himself of the thoughts, he turned, quickly shoving the book under his arm as he set to work finding the ingredients for the spell.
"Oikawa!" He yelled over his shoulder. "Get off your lazy ass and get to work on that summoning circle, you wanted to do this, you can at least do some of the work."
All he got was a muffled "yeah, yeah" in response.
Issei rolled his eyes, huffing in annoyance as he finished grabbing the ingredients and made his way back into the other room.
Summoning a familiar (that wasn't even going to be his, no less) wasn't high on the list of things Issei thought he would be doing at any given time, let alone two in the morning, in his own home. However, Oikawa was insistent, and Issei was too lazy to tell him to fuck off.
(He secretly hoped that the spell would backfire, blowing back in Oikawa's face like a number of spells did back when they were still teenagers. At least then Issei would get a little amusement in this otherwise boring, dreary night.)
"There we go, Mattsun!" Oikawa said cheerfully as he drew the last line of the circle and stood, carefully stepping around it and moving back towards the entrance.
"Don't sound so cheerful about it, moron." Issei mumbled as he came back into the room, brewing together the ingredients until it turned a light mint color. He then pushed into into Oikawa's hands. "Not everyone gets cat or bird shifters as familiars, you could get a damn shark for all we know."
Oikawa paled at Issei's words, and shivered. "Oh gods, I hope not."
"Regardless, whatever ends up in that circle is what you get. No refunds, from me or wherever the seven hells that thing will come from. Now shut up and go summon the damn thing."
Oikawa stuck his tongue out childishly as he walked over to the crudely drawn summoning circle. He crouched down and carefully dipped two fingers in the mixture, quietly muttering the words of the spell as he smeared it along the lines of the summoning circle. Issei watched in subdued fascination as the circle began to glow a soft pinkish red where Oikawa's fingers had touched it. Oikawa finished his task with a loud exclamation, (the final words that actually summoned the familiar) before bowing his head once and returning to his feet to stand next to Issei.
The air in the room crackled with magic energy, and Issei's body was buzzing from the foreign feeling. The light protruding from the circle was nearly blinding despite its soft color, bathing the entire room in a pink glow.
Smoke curled around the edges of the circle, and hot pink arcs of pure magic whipped through the air. Issei felt Oikawa's hand slip into his own, and for once he didn't push him away, instead squeezing his friend's hand reassuringly.
With a thundering boom that shook the entire house, the room fell both silent and dark, save for the faint glow from the lines of the summoning circle. Issei waved his arm, trying to dissipate the smoke still hanging in the room. He nudged Oikawa with his other arm, gesturing expectantly at the summoning circle.
Oikawa audibly gulped, meekly walking towards the circle, his hands fisted anxiously in the hem of his jacket. "H-Hello? Familiar?"
"You called?"
Issei cackled at the shriek that left Oikawa's mouth, the other witch jumping so high his head nearly hit the ceiling. Oikawa flailed, stumbling about as he struggled to regain his balance.
A yowl suddenly hit the air.
"Ow! Hey, watch where you're fucking going, man! That's my tail!"
Issei blinked once as Oikawa stumbled back in shock, staring down at the summoning circle with surprised eyes. Sat in the middle of the circle was a cat. Except it wasn't a regular (at least by witch familiar standards) cat. It was a sphynx cat, wrinkly, hairless, and ugly as hell. The cat met his gaze easily, tilting its head curiously.
"What? Is there something on my face?"
