I wake up to the sound of my phone vibrating, indicating I received a message. I slowly open my sleepy eyes and notice that there isn't any sunlight entering my room, unable to brighten my soul from the misery it has been experiencing locked up in my emotionally drained and weak body. Since the first night in Aunt Julie's house, I always felt the warming rays sting yet comfort my skin in the morning. This morning: it doesn't happen.
I reach for my phone. Is it John? Hopefully.
Hey girl how are you? :) Rachel texts me.
Oh Rachel. That's fine too. How I miss her talk.
I am about to text back great but that would be a lie; a big one. It's horrible and I need someone to talk to. So I text back: Shall we call?
I wait for a reply. I don't get one.
Rachel? I send.
Hello? I send again.
After five painstaking minutes, she calls me.
"Hey Rachel! Why did it take long to reply?" I immediately ask.
"April," she whispers. "I saw your parents return home. Is that planned? You're still in London right?"
"Oh my gosh," I gasp and my hand automatically covers my open mouth. My hands start to shake and I am about to drop my phone. They're safe! They are well and alive. I felt relieved, but also scared and worried. What's left for me? And this immediately reminds me of the letter. The letter I gave John on accident. A million thoughts run through my mind but I actually can't put my hands on the concept of every thought.
Rachel doesn't say anything, although I hadn't made a sound since I said "Oh my gosh." Suddenly I hear a door open on her side. I hear her gasp and suddenly ask, "w-w what are you-"
Then I hear the sound of some boys in the background, probably replying to Rachel's stuttering. I can't quite make out what they're saying but for one thing, my heart just stopped. "Go away! We're family friends okay? Go back in your house and do your girl stuff, okay? We're just visiting!" I gasp by the last words I managed to understand. Who are they? Just then Rachel speaks my mind.
"W-w who are you g-guys?" she asks.
"Rachel? What going on?" I just manage to utter through the microphone of my phone, hopefully loud enough for her to hear.
"What the - get off of me!" I hear her exclaim.
"Rachel are you okay?" I nearly shout into the phone.
"No she's being a nosy and naughty young lady okay girl?" I'm shocked. Did this stranger actually reply to me? Suddenly a whole noise of rapid movement and probably some violence rings into my ear through my phone. I am generally too astonished to say anything. What on earth is actually going on? I may seem to sound fairly calm, which is true, but suddenly the small candle lit flame inside of me, spreads into a wildfire. "WHO THE HECK ARE YOU? LEAVE RACHEL ALONE!" I shout into the phone, feeling so helpless and annoyed. I just want to jump into that phone, to where Rachel is and beat the living life out of these strangers.
"No stop, stop!" Rachel repeatedly squeals and I can tell by her screams she's hurt. "Leave me and my neighbours alone!" Neighbours... Mom and Dad?
"Shut the hell up or I will shoot you," I hear the guy say. What the devil is going on? Kill Rachel? Why?
"What she ever did do you, huh?" I shout fiercly into the phone. "Don't effing shoot her! You-you," I nearly let a swear word slip out of my mouth, which I hate doing. And I know that if I said it, it would make things worse. Then I hear the phone being picked up from probably having fallen onto the floor.
"I don't know who you are girl, but your friend here was invading our privacy. Just visiting these good old lawyers. Well to be completely honest, I will tell you something. We are the Weeders and we were born to kill the people who get in our way." The deep, raspy voice I have been hearing all along says in a much more sinister and clearer way.
He hangs up.
I drop my phone as a tear rolls down my cheeck. This can't be happening. We were born to kill the people who get in our way. It keeps repeating in my head scaring the living daylight out of me and I suddenly recognise the voice from the nightmare I had last night. The pizza dream.
