Valt Aoi. The undefeated wonder boy. He's walking through our doors right now. Me and Shu awaited him and Wakiya's arrival at the door. I checked for the cold exterior, the man behind the act he showed the screens, but there was none.
Immediately upon sighting Shu he ran and embraced him in a hug. I can't help but agonize over how Silas could lose to such a fool so easily. If Silas could beat me, even once, he should've shown this over-dramatic imbecile some real power.
Speaking of Silas, he was nowhere to be seen. He wasn't at the door to greet his former and current teammates.
He's going to have to face this eventually.
According to Wakiya, Valt complied with the terms of the team with nothing but enthusiasm and a spring in his step. His carelessness is inhumane. But he's strong; and we do certainly need him on the team.
"Welcome. Shu and I are grateful for your cooperation." I chime, gesturing for a handshake. Instead, he slaps it. He's a joke. He's so fucking immature, it's ridiculous. Shu seems to find it funny.
"It's great to be here. Theodore is toast with me on the team!"
It's cute he thinks he's the deciding blader.
"Where is Free De La Hoya?" Shu asks, and I notice the stern look of caution Wakiya has plastered on his face. "We suspect," He hesitates. I can see Shu mentally bracing himself. "Theodore has gotten to him first."
No amount of mental preparation could shield Shu from the sting of Wakiya's explanation. He stood in sheer shock. Even Wakiya looked at him in pity. This revelation hurt all of us, but it forced Shu to recount his time in the snake pit once again.
Nobody could grasp first hand what that hell was like, or the things its captives have to endure. Nobody but Shu; and it showed painfully in his eyes.
"Shu..." Valt whispers slowly.
Removing yourself from a situation is most effective when you act before the threat emerges and your true emotions surface. Shu had his opportunity to leave, but he told himself he could handle what came next. That was a failure on his behalf because now everyone present knows that there's a likely possibility that he's not mentally capable of leading this mission.
"Don't get comfortable. We leave at dusk." And then he walks away. Valt tries to bolt after him, but I shove my arm out in front of him. He looks at me, frustrated. But I shake my head. I've been there. He's going to want to be alone right now. Eventually, after minimal arguing and Wakiya taking my side, he backs down. I have a feeling it's only temporary. He thinks his unconditional support can help Shu. I can't stand the naivety.
"Since nobody bothered to ask, yes. I did locate the new 'snake pit.' And yes. I am the most brilliant on this team." Ruthlessly arrogant. Personality-wise, Wakiya hasn't changed in the slightest. "Ah, without a doubt." I laugh scornfully. "We need to go somewhere discreet. Where's Karlisle?" That's odd. In private he addressed him in Silas, but in public, they suddenly aren't on a first-name basis?
"I believe he's having trouble grappling with the fact that tomorrow he'll be faced with the most important battle in his life, and if he loses a raging old man who looks somewhat like a raccoon due to his absurd haircut will take him and keep him prisoner or kill him."
Wakiya's torso is tilted backward, his mouth half-opened. "Well, you didn't have to put it so bluntly!" He yells. "Yeah, jeez! What's your problem?!" Valt exclaims subsequently after. I laugh again. This is a surprisingly hilarious duo. Their friendship gives off love-hate vibes, but in actuality, their personalities intertwine well.
The wonder boy and the master of ambition. Wakiya is bound to act constantly done with Valt's bullshit, but it'd probably bore Wakiya to death if he didn't have him around. And Wakiya knows that; but he'd never admit it, of course. His pride would take a hit if he did so, and we all know if his confidence dies so does his unwavering ambition. "Let's go to my dorm room. There's a desk there and a computer we can operate."
"Weren't you attacked there?" Valt, the nincompoop, presents a logical point. If I didn't sleep on campus after the incident, maybe it is unwise to take our discoveries there. "Fine, since you're so concerned let's go to the training room. It's likely empty; seeing it is indeed lunchtime."
In reality, I was hoping we'd find Silas. I know he doesn't want to see Wakiya, but whether he likes it or not he is part of the team. He needs to work with us. Him and I are key pawns in this plan; we're the bait. Raccoon will want the people that know about him contained. Our lives are bargaining chips.
I was right.
Silas was training again. He looked absolutely exhausted, as if he might collapse at any minute. Part of me wonders if he came back after our talk yesterday evening. "Silas." I approached him. He was so pale, squeezing his eyes shut before opening them again when he heard my voice. "Jesus Lord." Wakiya clutched his arm with his opposite hand.
"You need to take a break." His dazed expression turns mad. "Don't tell me what to do." He scowls before ripping his bey into the stadium, it quivering before falling still. "You should be practising." He collapsed to the ground, using his arms behind him to support his body.
"Yeah, well actually we've been working to figure out where the Raccoon is hiding. And we have, thanks to Wakiya. We're leaving in a few hours, so you might want to sleep before you pass the fuck out." My patience is gone. He isn't helping anything by overworking himself like this. "I-I can't."
At this point, his determination isn't even respectable. He's being stubborn and it's frustrating me. "Listen man, you gotta go!" Brilliant. Valt picked the worst time to speak up. "I lost to you. I can't stop training! I can't lose this time!" He struggles to stand again. I've seen enough of this.
As I move closer to him, his arms give out from underneath him and he passes out.
Fear is a hell of a fuel for ambition.
