Shu looks so happy on the airplane.
Valt's dancing around, handing out Bey bread. Mine looks roughly like Dauntless Dahlia, and it tastes marvelous. I'm beginning to see what Shu sees in the boy. He's got a heart of gold; a true passion for Beyblade. That's what carried him to the top. Though they both share their ambition for Beyblade, Shu and Valt are opposites. That's what makes their friendship so compatible. Valt brings joy into Shu's life and gives him a goal to surpass.
Though, I do remember when it was the other way around.
Valt defeating Red Eye persists to be the greatest battle I've ever witnessed. But even after everything they've been through, they're still inseparable. And while Shu awaits his impending doom, he laughs by Valt's side. Silas and Wakiya also enjoy Valt's company. He has both of their attention and is keeping them entertained. For some reason it feels like that isn't his goal; his personality is built to lift the spirit of those around him.
When Valt finally calms down and takes his seat beside Shu, I decide it's time I share the fate changing news. The moment I've been waiting for since we took off.
"Gentlemen."
I stand before everyone, and when all eyes are on me I reach into my pocket and reveal our secret weapon.
Shocked gasps fill the aircraft. I smirk.
"Meet Nemesis Dahlia."
"No way!" Valt exclaims, there are stars deep in his blue eyes. "You've just been hiding this from us?!" Wakiya sounds betrayed on a personal level. He's just jealous. "It's...breathtaking?" Silas must've meant it literally because it looked as if the wind had been knocked clean out of his lungs.
Shu just stares. He's analyzing the bey, no doubt.
"How?" He stammers. "Where did it come from?"
I close my eyes and return the bey to safety in my pocket. "It was a gift." My eyes snap open. "From Nemesis herself. The Goddess of Revenge." They're all suspicious. I'm met with skepticism and doubt, which was to be predicted. It's far fetched, but the absolute truth.
"It's an ancient Greek prophecy. The Beyblade was created by a Goddess to aid in the pursuit of justice, usually by utilizing its potent techniques and destroying the opposing Bey." Their expressions of doubt are unwavering. "She came to me in my sleep. Told me of the prophecy. When I awoke, I discovered Nemesis Dahlia had replaced Dauntless Dahlia."
"I've heard of that!" Wakiya blurts, the rest of the room turning their focus to him. "I read about it in a book. The Goddesses swore to give 'the most powerful woman in the world of men 'an ultimate gift.' A Beyblade! It's constructed to shape the power and purpose represented by the Goddess who took it upon themself to create it. In this case, if it were the Goddess of Revenge that would mean-"
"She foresees an act of harm done towards us in the future that she doesn't want to go unavenged." Shu finished. He's heard of it too. Not all of it, but a fraction nonetheless.
"Ah, haha! That's so awesome!" Valt beams. "Nemesis poured her entire heart into that Bey, it may be too powerful for you to handle. In order for you to control your Bey you need to tame part of a Goddess. Which obviously isn't easy, but if you don't learn it's power could consume you. You would become a vessel for Nemesis, and be condemned to the Underworld for the rest of eternity." He says, ever so casually. His feet propped up on the small table, checking his well-manicured nails.
"I don't get it? If she doesn't control her Bey, it'll-" Valt can't even bring himself to finish the sentence.
"It will kill her." Shu stares at the ground. "This is a blessing, not a curse." Wakiya sighs. He thinks I've already overpowered the Goddess. He thinks I've got this in the bag. He is wrong.
This is a Wattpad fanfiction; not a children's picture book. Not all protagonists will live to see the end.
"No." Silas stands up, leaning on the table Wakiya's feet are resting upon just to gain some balance. "You can't fight."
"I'm the only real shot this team has at winning. God only knows what kind of hidden power Theodore has created." I sigh, quickly shutting him down.
"How do you control it?" Shu asks.
"I'll go into a match. The more power I use, the more likely the chance that I'll perish. I've got to take it slow. If the power attempts to consume me, my skin will slowly burn until there is nothing left of me but ash, if I'm not careful. But if I survive, the Bey is mine."
Silas genuinely looks like he's already mourning me. He's fear-stricken. Wakiya already has the bar set so high for me, and Valt can't see this not playing out in my favor. Neither of them grasps the difficulty of accomplishing this. Ah, the blinding beauty of optimism.
It seems as though Shu and I are taking the same approach to things. Unsure how to feel. Am I terrified? Of course; a Goddess in the spirit of a Beyblade is about to try to burn me alive and send me to hell. But there's a greater chance that the team and I could come out as the victor in all this. For now, I need to live in the present; something I haven't been able to do recently.
As the plane touches down in Chile, I've nothing on my mind but the people with me. My friends.
The intellectual.
The cold-hearted.
The arrogant.
And the light in the darkness, the Wonder Boy.
We will get out of this okay. I swear on my life.
