"See you on the other side, Hermione's probably already got a compartment. Come find us," I said, waving to Harry and Ron before disappearing through the barrier with the twins.
Platform 9 ¾ was packed with parents and students, the younger ones looking sad to leave and the older ones looking glad. I dragged my trunk through the carpeted hallways, finally spotting Hermione in a compartment at the back of the train. She was sitting in there alone, and jumped up when she saw me.
"Oh, Ashlynn, I'm so excited for this year, aren't you?" she beamed. "I've read all of our schoolbooks already and I can't wait for turning animals into water goblets in Transfiguration." I laughed and sat down in the seat opposite her.
"Where are Harry and Ron?" she asked, bringing out a bit of parchment and scribbling some notes on it.
"I'm not sure," I frowned. "They were supposed to come through the barrier after me. Maybe Malfoy held them up, I'll go look for them."
I went up and down the train, looking for any sign of them, but the pair was nowhere to be found. I did run into Neville, though, who had lost Trevor again.
"No sign of them," I said, creasing my brow.
"Do you think they're alright?" whispered Hermione.
"I'm sure they're fine," I waved a hand, though there was a seed of doubt in my gut. "Maybe Dumbledore wanted to talk to them personally or something. You know how Harry is." Hermione nodded, but she seemed unconvinced.
After buying some sweets from the trolley and talking about our coursework, Hermione and I got our robes out to prepare for when we needed to change. I noticed something poke out of the bottom of Hermione's clothing bag.
"Hermione? What's that?" I asked, pointing. Hermione pulled it out and showed it to me.
"It's a cassette," she said casually.
"Like one of the ones you play music on?" I had heard of cassettes, but I'd never been able to afford one, having used every penny I had for extra food.
"Yeah," she said, tilting her head. "Here, I'll play it for you."
She popped the cassette tape into what she later told me was a cassette player, and music started to play.
"This one's one of my favorites, when it came out it was number one for a long time," Hermione said, starting to tap her feet to the beat of the music. I had no idea what "Number One" meant, but I sure as heck liked the sound coming out of the cassette player. I just sat, spellbound, listening to the music.
Well, baby used to stay out all night long
She made me cry, she done me wrong
She hurt my eyes open, that's no lie
Tables turn and now her turn to cry
Hermione stood up and grabbed my hand, pulling me up to a standing position beside her. I giggled as she grabbed my hands and danced me all around the compartment, ignoring the weird stares from passersby we were getting.
Because I used to love her, but it's all over now
Because I used to love her, but it's all over now
"I can't believe I never bought one of these for the kids!" I exclaimed, as Hermione dipped me and we burst into giggles. "They'd love it."
Well, she used to run around with every man in town
She spent all my money, playing her high-class game
She put me out, it was a pity how I cried
