I moved to New York not knowing anyone. Or anything about the city.
Well, finally the first week here is over so I kinda wanted to celebrate.
I sat in a booth at some bar called MacLauren's Pub, sitting alone with a beer at my side, engulfed in my own thoughts, with nothing to distract me... until a loud group came into the Pub.
"That wasn't until-" he said and saw poor old me in my seat alone and his tone lowered. "Drew, Drew, there's someone in our seat!"
The girl who apparently was Drew, rolled her eyes and walked to my booth. "Listen up son," she said, putting her hands down on the table. "This is kind of the table my 'gang' uses."
"Oh, well... do you want me to move?" I asked.
"Drew, I think he's new here. Maybe we can add him to the gang?" a girl said from behind the tall blonde guy.
Drew took her hands off the table. "Oh."
"Are you sure?" the blonde guy asked.
"Yeah, why not. We can always get another seat," the girl said, sliding into the booth, sitting next to me, giving me a small smile.
I felt my cheeks go red. How often does a pretty girl sit next to you?
"Ava," she said, holding out her hand.
Just before I shook her hand, Ava moved her hand to her head.
"Psych!"
"Awe, c'mon, Ave. Don't 'psych' him," Drew said.
"Yeah, that's mean!" the blonde guy said. "i'll have to 'uncouple' you if you don't stop psyching people!"
Ava cocked an eyebrow and looked at the blonde guy, who apparently was dating her and raised her left hand and halfway pulled off a diamond ring. "Well I guess this is it, Char. It was nice!"
"Oh heck no!" the blonde guy exclaimed, but to his luck, Ava slid the ring back on her finger.
Well, there goes my chances.
Drew broke the silence and looked at me with sympathetic eyes. "Well, um... whats your name?"
"Dan," I answered.
"Yeah, Dan! So, where're you from?" Drew asked.
"Drew, you're the smart one. Isn't it obvious where he's from," Ava said.
"Um, well like what Ava said, it's kinda obvious," I agreed.
Drew flushed. "Ah, well, where in Australia are you from?"
"Um, Melbourne," I replied, awkwardly. No one told me what Americans are like and I'm hoping that they're all not this difficult to be around.
"The south... I see," Drew said.
"So, are you all from New York?" I asked.
They all shook their heads. "Nah, I'm from California," said the blonde guy, Charlie.
"I'm from the land of KFC, or better known as Kentucky and Drew was born somewhere in Mexico and moved to Cali when she was in elementary or something and met Charlie," Ava said.
We talked and talked 'till it was the wee hours.
"Besties for life?" Drew asked.
We all laughed, then they all looked at me eagerly.
"Alright, alright. Besties for life," I laughed.
"Well since we're now besties, I'll call up a roun-" Charlie said.
"Nah, it's on me," I said.
"No! It should be one of us! You're new here-" Drew complained.
"The party don't stop 'till I walk in," a person sang.
He was slender and lean, with cropped dark brown hair.
"Ren!" the group yelled.
"I didn't expect you to be here!" Ava said.
"Neither did I but I came pick up some ladies-" Ren said.
"But what about Mirah?" Ava asked. "y'know our Canadian friend-"
Ren looked lost of words. "Yeaaaaaah, I'd rather not."
He pulled out a chair and sat on it backwards just as the beers and wines came.
Ava picked up her wine glass. "Why not? She's perfect for you!"
Ren sighed. "Because I got someone... pr... pruney?"
Charlie choked on his beer. "Ren you're awful at lying! You got a girl pregnant- WHAT THE HECK?"
"Seriously, why weren't you using any protection?" Drew asked.
"I think it broke, I'm sorry. I didn't poke holes in it on purpose," Ren scoffed.
Ava took her attention off of Ren to take a look at me. "I'm sorry this happened on our first meeting."
I shook my head. "Nah, it's... fine... I guess."
