Saving Shimmer - Wings of Fire Story

Chapter 2

"Who is that?" one of Silver's guards say. She is a smaller dragon who appears to be a very light silver colour, with ribbons of dark silver running through the back of her wings.

"It's Shimmer, and you are?" I studier her a little more closely, it is hard to tell through there iron helmet and spear.

"Oh, um hi haha you are the heir to the throne, omg I am actually meeting you sorry, um, I am Spark, I just moved into the guard patrols." She fumbles, taking her helmet off.

"Nice to meet you, I love the silver pattern on the back of your wings! I have never seen that before!" I add conversationally.

she blushes with pride. "Really?! Thank you! Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes, there is actually. I need to get into the plant section of the library." I state, nodding my head over towards the plant section of the library. The big stone arches sit above the cast iron bars, with old stone and moss framing the archway. There are over three hundred scrolls in the plant section alone. The library desk is just inside, although it is empty at nighttime. Large stone pillars are scattered in between the sky-high bookshelves.

"Of course." She fumbles with her keys as we walk over to the door. "Alrighty, what are you reading about?" She smiles over at me, it's nice to see someone that is actually curious.

"I am just trying to find a species of plant that I came across today. Because I love plants!" I say, not trying to give to much away about the most amazing day.

"Nice, I don't mind plants, I came from a family of plant farmers." She looks down at her talons like she is missing something. But puts her head up and smiles as soon as she sees me looking.

"Lovely, I will have to visit someday." I smile at her, "See you around Spark."

"Yes, that would be great, see you." Her grin was wider but also it seemed sort of hollow, like she was wishing for something a bit more interesting in her life.

I walk into the plant section of the great library, turn a lamp on and read. I flick through half a dozen scrolls until I find one about cave plants. Afterwards, I start walking back to my room when I hear an echo following me.

"Hello Shimmer." A snakey voice calls from behind.

"Hello, Aunt Silver, how are you this evening," I turn to meet her narrow gaze.

"Quite well thank you, what have you got there?" she hisses as if I have stolen her crown. Her voice rumbles inside the halls as she, she is about 3 times the size of me. She arches her back to make herself look bigger; she loves to think I am scared of her. Just because she is my Queen that she hates my guts, I am not afraid to talk to her the way she talks to me.

"Just another scroll about plants, I was looking for some new material." I stand up as tall as I can, matching her glare.

"Interesting, see you soon Shimmer," the words drop from her mouth like snakes. She readjusts her jewelry and looks at me as if she is saying "I am better than you."

"Bye, goodnight." I swish away and keep on towards my room. I start to read the scroll about all these new plants I saw in the cave. I want to find out everything, so I can try and grow some of these plants in my room, which already has about 30 plants in there. I curl up on my bed and take my jewel bracelet off my arm and my silver necklace. Then I close my eyes, and dream of Mercury's smile and his laugh, the light spots of silver scattered on the top of his talons. The way that his four horns sparkle in the sun and how his dedication to the things that he loves is so strong.

"Hey, psst, Shim, Shimmer, SHIMMER!" a person shout whispers. I roll over on my side to see Mercury on the other side of me.

"Oh, haha hi sorry, how long have you been there?" I question. Has he been watching me sleep? I mean not that is a bad thing, I am glad he is here. What if he heard everything, I thought about him?

"Not too long haha. Meet me at the cave tonight?" I nod in agreement I know he has to go to work, so I let him go.

He exits the door quickly and silently. About an hour later my Mother comes in she is wearing her favourite pieces of jewelry, her head band in embroidered with jewels.
"Hello, where were you last night?" Bracelet (aka my Mother) says,

"Just looking for some new plant scroll material; sorry I should have said."

"No don't worry. Just curious that's all."

"Why are you all dressed up?" I ask

"Oh yes, there is a royal meeting at lunch, but don't worry you don't have to attend. I already told Silver you are going to the famers market." She smiles her old, motherly smile.

"Thank you, Mother." I stand up and hug her.

"I love you." She hugs me back and looks down into my eyes, "You are a good person, always know that."

"So are you." I look up into her light grey eyes, and straighten up her small crown, "Okay I have a farmers market to attend to." I smirk up at my Mother and give her a talon squeeze, go make breakfast and get ready for the day. I walk down the road into the farmers market and see an abundance of fresh food, plants, and new ideas. I talk to some of the farmers, I find Sparks parents and purchase some of their plants. They have lots of variety and they were lovely people, I have a feeling that Spark and I will be good friends one day. I leave the famers market and return home. I plant out some of the plants that I brought next to a shelf on the window.

I am restless for the remainder of the day, until I go to the cave. My heartbeat motivates my wings faster than they ever have before. I swing through the light air, the full moon shines brightly from the east. The cave is just ahead, I venture through the veil of vines into the cave and see Mercury swimming around in the deep aqua pools.

"Watch out." I run up and jump into the warm pool next to Mercury.

"Hello, you," he smiles at me I, once again, melt, "I have been itching to get here and see you all day."

"Me too! I found out some things about the plants in here." I say in wonder. There are so many plants!

"You're cute." He ducks under water to miss my attack, but he also misses my blush and sigh of lovingness.

"Your cute as well," he swims over and holds my talons in his as we drift in the water, both blushing under the moon light.
