although sunwoo was at the back of the room where barely any light was reaching, chanhee didn't fail to notice him when he went out on the stage to set up some of the props they were going to rehearse with. sure, he did look around for a bit and had to squint his eyes but that wasn't important. for a moment he had even thought that sunwoo decided to not come at all. he was actually even expecting that as the more possible outcome. but when he saw him, he felt pleasantly surprised. not long after, he suddenly realized that a rush of nervousness settled inside him and he didn't even know why.
he was obviously used to having an audience so it most likely wasn't that. he recollected himself and as soon as he set up the props, he went into the backroom to get more. when he got there he felt younghoon's gaze land on him. chanhee looked back at him coldly and only raised an eyebrow at him before picking up more things to carry. "at least make yourself useful, don't just stand around staring at people," he barked at the taller and walked away.
once the stage was set, the rehearsal finally began and it was as if all the nervousness in chanhee suddenly disappeared. he had forgotten about who was watching him, he had forgotten about his anger towards younghoon and all his worries in general. that's what he liked about the theater club, once he was rehearsing or performing on the stage he could leave all his problems at the door.
during the three years he had been studying there he had changed a lot of clubs trying to find the activity that he liked the most and that he could keep up with. he even tried a few sports but as we already know, that took a little bit too much effort and energy for him so he quickly dropped them. the reason he started considering joining the theater club was because he was previously in the literature club but it was too quiet for him. he needed some type of dynamic and while he really liked reading he was getting easily bored.
he couldn't expect much more from a literature club, honestly, but his interest piqued once when he found out that coincidentally the theater club was working on making a play based on the book he was currently reading. it was like he had finally found his calling and he went to rehearsals once just to watch, then he wanted to try out.
so there he currently was, being the so called "star" of the theater club. of course, he didn't look on himself like that, he just liked acting, but it would've been a lie if he said he didn't like all the attention he was getting. he liked being known and noticed. that was the dynamic he needed so much - to work for what he liked and to perform in front of people who liked him and his work.
to sunwoo's surprise, he was quite impressed by chanhee's acting even if it was just a rehearsal and everyone still needed their scripts in hand to read from them and weren't necessarily going full out with their roles. but it was obvious how talented chanhee was since he was so in character and barely ever needed to look at his script.
he actually didn't regret going unlike he expected. he kind of even enjoyed watching.
after it was over and the theater club started putting away the props and moving them to the backroom, sunwoo got a text from chanhee asking him to wait for him so they could go to the train station together. he was just about to leave and head home but he decided it wouldn't hurt him if he waited.
he even considered helping out but he wasn't sure if he wasn't just going to get in the way of everyone who knew where the props had to be put so he just waited outside. it was already getting a bit cold and he had only brought a thin jacket with himself but luckily it wasn't anything that he couldn't handle. he could still feel slight warmth in the steady wind.
"hey," chanhee said with a smile as he walked out of the building and neared sunwoo who only returned the smile. "thank you for waiting for me. we can go now."
the two boys headed towards the train station and chanhee almost immediately started talking to sunwoo about the play they were working on and how excited he was about it, how he couldn't wait to actually perform. he really wasn't one who was able to hide his excitement and sunwoo looked like he was genuinely interested in listening to him therefore he didn't stop talking all the way to the train station and even a little bit after they got on the train.
it was once again packed and they didn't have where to sit so they were standing by the window.
"you're still not saying anything, are you?" chanhee suddenly questioned almost as soon as he was done talking about himself.
sunwoo looked at him as if he didn't expect that chanhee would still be bothered by the fact he was the only one talking.
"it's not like i didn't hear you speak already so what's stopping you from talking to me? see i talk to you so much but during all this time you haven't said a single word. i still don't even know how you do that. or is it that you still don't want to-"
"i think you did really well," sunwoo interrupted him.
for chanhee even such a short response felt enough right now. "thank you."
