"Let me see the ring!" I jolt from my seat in shock when Margie suddenly appears beside me, frantic and panting. Her two nannies came in through the door not long after, pushing a stroller each with her twins. I only look at her in bewilderment, a little frazzled by her sudden appearance.
"W-what?"
She rolls her eyes and makes her way to sit beside me. She grabs my hand and shows me the ring that was securely hugging my finger. Oh, that ring. She leans in, taking a closer look to inspect the diamond as if she can see the price through it. She brings her own hand and raises it beside mine, her brows furrowed in pure focus.
"It's so much bigger than mine, what the hell. And damn, I love how the band is filled with diamonds. Aww! Your ring is so nice!" She squeals. I let out an amused smile at her excitement. She was beaming as if I was getting married for real. I mean, I am. But not entirely for real.
I chuckle and look at my finger. I watch it as it sparkles every time the sun's rays bounce on it. It was beautiful, I won't deny that. But for some reason, I don't exactly feel like it's supposed to be there. It's mine, but not entirely. Mine for the time being, as well as everything else I'm about to share with Nadech. At the end of the day, we weren't real. And I couldn't help but imagine seeing this ring on someone else's finger, it's like I'm only guarding it for her right now. And for some unknown reason, it makes me slightly uneasy.
"I can't believe you're getting married!"
I roll my eyes and give her a knowing look. She knew the whole story, and yet she acts like she doesn't. She knew the ulterior motive and the entire story behind this arrangement. There was really nothing possible I could hide from my best friend. Even before, until now that she's a mother, there's nothing she can't see through. Like motherhood heightened her instincts.
"Oh come on, I know. But still, my best friend is still getting married." She giggles, brushing her shoulders on mine. I shake my head and laugh, turning my attention to her kids in the table with their nannies. I smile at Mia who was looking at me, her cheeky toothless grin making me smile more.
"Don't worry, I'll be more excited in your next wedding." I huff a breath, nudging her arm hard. She immediately whines, complaining about her skin and how she might bruise. She was kinda pale though, her skin tone was a shade fairer than mine.
"Anyways, when do I get to meet this Nadech of yours?" She asks me, sipping from the coffee that has just been served to our table. I pick up the yellow macaroon and shrug my shoulders. Do I have to introduce him to my friends, like, do I have to?
Will he introduce me to his friends also? Is that even necessary?
"What? You can't hide him from us. You're going to marry the guy." I nod my head to stop her acquisition.
"I know, I know. I'll see what I can do."
"Invite him to my birthday party."
I look at her in surprise.
"You're having a birthday party?"
She glances up at me and grins, wiggling her eyebrows. I immediately see vivid images of the parties she once threw when we were still in college. Wild, messy, and loud. The type that sends you home with ringing ears and disorientation. If I was a party girl, she was beyond that. I salute her husband for taming the wild child.
"You have children under one."
She chuckles and waves a hand at me as if it was no big deal at all. She sets her cup on the table and turns to me.
"I know what you're thinking, it's not that. We're just going to have a nice dinner at my house with everyone. So you better bring that fiance of yours on Saturday."
