SIRIUS WAS FEELING three things at the moment.
One: mortification, two: confusion, and three: a horrendous amount of spilled liquid on his clothes.
He really hadn't meant to make a scene, but when he looked up and saw not only the silky dark hair and bright eyes of the girl from summer but the blazing new Gryffindor tie accompanying her, he couldn't help but choke on his drink out of pure shock and surprise.
He slapped James hard to get him to stop laughing and tried his best to avoid the burning gaze now on him from the girl that had been the cause of his altercation.
His cheeks flushed pink and he busied himself with drying both himself and the table to distract himself from the fact.
"Pads, are you kidding me?" James gasped through his dying chuckles, "I literally told you she would be here! Why in Merlin's name did it surprise you enough to do that?"
"Well, I didn't do it on purpose. I just wasn't expecting it! Now, shut up," Sirius hissed.
"What a way to make an impression, really."
"I said shut up. What am I meant to do now?" Sirius whined.
"You've already done it. There's no point crying over spilled pumpkin juice," James said, just barely containing another round of uncontrollable giggles at his words. Sirius glared at him.
While the two bickered between themselves, Remus had discovered the new arrival.
"You're new here, right? From Beauxbatons?" He asked. He had figured this was the mystery girl James and Sirius had been whispering about the whole train ride. He wasn't aware of why they were going on about her, but figured it had to do with the pretty face; that was usually the reason, anyway.
"Yeah," She muttered, still a bit flustered from the previous excitement, "I'm Diana."
"Remus, nice to meet you."
Diana finally turned and smiled at him, taking in his fawn-coloured jumble of hair, kind brown eyes, and the light scars that decorated his face. She was starting to see what Marlene was talking about; the group of boys surrounding her was all unfairly handsome.
Even James, despite his creepiness (which Diana was starting to understand, seeing the way he was feverishly whispering with Sirius), was remarkably good-looking with jet black wavy hair and hazel eyes.
She assumed the last boy, who was a bit plumper with the lightest hair of them all, was Peter. Yes, as Marlene said, he didn't have the devilishly handsome looks, but he was still a fine-looking person and his eyes held a nice kind of innocence.
The girls were all gorgeous too, and Diana was suddenly feeling incredibly out of place the more the group looked at her and she at them.
She was immensely glad when the doors to the hall swung open once more, Professor McGonagall leading in the group of first-years who'd been waiting patiently for their sorting ceremony.
The smaller students all wandered in a child-like haze as they took in the room around them.
The hat from before was now on a stool at the front of the room, situated on the platformed stage where the teachers all sat.
For the first time, Diana looked up to see Albus Dumbledore right in the middle of the table. She'd heard a lot about the wizard, but seeing him in person was much different. He was wearing draping robes of purple with a matching hat to complete it. A pair of half-moon spectacles sat atop his crooked nose that did little to conceal the twinkling magic within his wise eyes. His beard was silver and fell so long it had to be tucked into his belt.
