‘I’m in love with you,’ he said quietly

 

‘Augustus,” I said.

 

‘I am,’ he said. He was staring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. ‘I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.’

 

‘Augustus,’ I said again, not knowing what else to say. It felt like everything was rising up in me, like I was drowning in this weirdly painful joy, but I couldn’t say it back. I could-

 

'Hey, there you are. I've been looking all over for you.'Augus- I mean Ashton said, walking towards me. I was in the ‘secret garden’, okay, it wasn’t that secret, but nobody ever came here. Actually, it was probably because nobody knew this place existed and we never bothered to tell anyone, It was somewhere inside a forest and it was beside a river and was the best place for hanging out with friends or just yourself. Jason and Ashton found it when they were 10 adn was going on an ‘adventure’. The next day, Ashton brought me here, saying I must never tell anyone about this. After a lot of negotiation, I was finally allowed to bring Trisha here. Ever since then, it had been our hang out place. Obviously, I didn’t hang out with Jason, but you know what I mean. Another thing amazing about this place is that it was in the middle of all our houses/castles and it only took a 5 minute drive.

 

'Urgh! Ash! I was reading. You do not interrupt me when Augustus just -'

'Okay, okay. Jeez, calm down' he said, holding his hand up. I stood up and decided to change the topic.

 

'So, you were looking for me?'

 

'Oh, right, Mom and Dad want to talk to us. But you weren't answering your phone, so I thought you'd be here.'

 

'Oh, sorry. Phone's on silent' I said after checking my phone 'What do they wanna talk to us about?'

 

'Dunno, guess we'll just havta find out together.'
