BACKGROUND: Toph found out that Suki had taught Sokka the Kyoshi Warriors' style of fighting and that she made him wear traditional Kyoshi Warrior garb. She burst out laughing at the thought of Sokka in makeup, saying, "THIS I gotta see." So, a week later, she made a bet with Sokka.
"I bet I could get Iroh to talk about tea for a whole hour," Toph boasted.
"No way!" Sokka replied. "I'll take that bet. He may be a tea fanatic, but no one could possibly talk about tea for an hour."
"You seem so sure about that," Toph said, smirking now. "It's a bet!"
"Okay, but if you lose, you have to let Katara do girly things with you."
Toph pantomimed gagging and shuddered.
"Ughh... FINE!"
Sokka smiled proudly.
"It's worth it..." Toph muttered to herself. "Alright, alright, moving on to the more likely outcome... if you lose, you have to wear a Kyoshi Warrior outfit AND makeup for an ENTIRE DAY!"
Red seeped over Sokka's cheeks. He frowned.
"FINE," he said, rolling his eyes.
Sokka watched with crossed arms as Toph sauntered into the tea shop.
"Mr. Iroh, sir?" Toph said, putting on her "dumb schoolgirl" voice.
"Oh! Toph! It's great to see you here! I'm so glad you came, can I get you anything?"
"Hmmmmm," Toph said, wasting time. Sokka looked at the hourglass in his hand.
"I don't know what to get! Can you explain what kinds of teas you have? I've never had tea before!"
Iroh looked as if someone had just told him they'd never drunken water before.
"You've never had tea?!" he exclaimed.
Sure enough, this sent him on a lengthy rant about tea that lasted exactly one hour and six minutes. As the top of the hourglass drained completely, Sokka threw his head into his hands and groaned.
"I can't believe this," he complained.
Toph turned to face Sokka as Iroh left to get her a jasmine tea, a smug grin on her face.
"Sokka has to wear makeup," she sang.
Sokka hung his head.
The next day, Toph burst into Sokka's room with Suki at her side before the sun had risen.
"MAKEUP TIME, SLEEPYHEAD!!"
Sokka sat bolt upright in his bed.
"Why are you here so early?!" he exclaimed.
"Because! You said you'd do it for a whole day! You're lucky I didn't wake you up earlier!" she replied, punching him out of bed.
Sokka sighed and groaned. Suki ushered him into a chair and started on his makeup.
As she worked her magic and Toph absolutely lost her mind laughing, Sokka realized that he didn't hate this as much as he expected to. Of course the endless ridiculing from toph wasn't exactly fun, but he actually didn't mind the makeup.
When Suki had finished and toph had drained her tear ducts from laughing so hard, Toph yanked Sokka by the arm towards the door.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?!" Sokka yelled, pulling away.
"We're gonna go show everyone how pretty you look, girly!"
"No! Nowhere in the bet did we say that you could dictate where I go. I'm staying here!"
Toph frowned intensely, upset that she didn't think to put that in the terms of their bet.
"Fine! But I'm staying here! There's no way you can spend the whole day in here. You gotta eat sometime!"
"Would you like to bet?" Sokka teased.
Toph scoffed and jumped back onto the bed.
"You won't last thirty minutes," she predicted.
Sokka's brow furrowed. He sat back down in his chair.
"Uhm.... I have to go to the bathroom," Suki said, looking back and forth at the two. She bolted out of the room.
She walked down the hallway and saw a figure walking the opposite way.
"Suki?"
Her eyes widened. "Zuko!"
"Why are you out here this late? Er— early?"
"Uhhmm..."
She gave up on coming up with a convincing lie. "Well, toph and Sokka had a bet and she forced me to be apart of it." She shrugged, sparing Zuko the details to spare Sokka from humiliation. "B-but why are you here? What are you doing up so— uhm, three in the morning?"
"Well, I—uh, I was actually going to see Sokka."
Suki facepalmed internally.
"Oh!" was all she could say. "Cool."
"So they're— in his room?"
Suki froze.
She sighed. "Yeah, they are."
"Thanks," Zuko said, walking towards Sokka's room.
"Yeah," Suki replied halfheartedly. "Ugh, I'm useless," she scolded herself when he was out of earshot.
Sokka and Toph heard a knock on the door.
"Come in," Toph sang.
Zuko opened the door. Toph's face lit up.
"Zuko!" she exclaimed happily, running to hug him.
"Zuko!" Sokka squeaked, embarrassed.
Zuko's cheeks were tinted pink.
"Um— what, uh, what are you doing here?" Sokka asked timidly.
"I—" Zuko cleared his throat. "I wanted to talk to you."
The room was silent.
"But I, uh, I see you're— you're busy, so I'll come back later?"
"Uh—" he didn't know how to respond. "Yeah, yeah. I'll see you later."
Zuko nodded. You could cut through the tension between them with a knife. He silently left, leaving Toph staring at Sokka with a disgusted look on her face.
"What the fuck was that?"
