I'm pissy right now for no fucking reason so I'm just gonna list some shit that gets me going.
1. The "All Lives Matter" Movement
Why I don't like it: it completely undermines the idea of the Black Lives Matter movement. It was made to contradict Black Lives Matter and it does nothing but slow the progress of Black Lives Matter. It's a useless movement because All Lives Matter cannot actually accomplish it's goal, if it even has one. There are far to many issues concerning prejudice- whether it be race, religion, sexuality/gender or even just nationality and to try and tackle that with one movement is a preposterous idea that will never actually work. Whether it be the blatant racially biased justice system of the United States; the rampant violence that Muslims, specifically female Muslims, face for their practice; or the disgusting dehumanization of the Latinos/Latinas and Hispanics in ICE and the conservative media; they all need focus and individual efforts made to end their struggles. One movement will not accomplish that.
2. Microlabeling in LGBT+ Community
Why I don't like it: It is harmful. I know a lot of people might read this and get pissed, so allow me to explain.
Sexuality is a fluid thing. It can be a man enjoying the sexual company of men, but only men with beards. They are gay with a preference for men with beards. That man is gay. A woman who is attracted to men and women but has a very strong preference to women. That woman is bisexual.
They have sexual preferences. Sexual preferences do not define sexuality.
Sexuality is purely what sex you are attracted to. That is not to say you are attracted to all people of that sex: just as straight people have types; gays, lesbians, bisexuals and pansexuals have types. This is not new. When people use their sexual preferences to define their sexuality as microlabeling does, it invalidates the community by allowing others to see the ignorant use of these terms and associating them with the whole community. This invalidates the people who use their definitions of sexuality and gender to define themselves in such a way that fits with the terms use.
However, I understand sexual preference. It's okay to use terms for it, but it is important that we do not mix it with sexuality. Sexuality and sexual preference are two different things. Sexuality defines the sex you have the potential of engaging with sexually, whereas sexual preference defines the specific types of people you would chose to engage in sexual activity with.
As an example, I will use myself.
Sexuality: Bisexual.
Sexual Preference: I lean more toward women, but if I find myself comfortable with a guy I'm not opposed.PLEASE understand this is not to invalidate how you may have labeled yourself. This is to inform, educate, and give my own perspective. I see terms like Demisexual and I understand where they came from and why they are used, but it needs to be understood that this is not defining sexuality, it is defining sexual preference. Whatever terms you use, idgaf. That's your life. That's you. However, there is no need to feel like you need a label. Bi, gay, straight, lesbian, whatever— you're all human, and you all deserve the best.
I'll post pt. 2 tomorrow
