My foot tapped against the muddy path, bouncing impatiently. Where is Darling? I wondered. I bundled tighter in my coat, because the air was cool. The clouds above were gray and it looked as if it might rain soon. Suddenly, I saw a figure running towards me. The silhouette of her long, wavy hair told me at once that it was Darling. She darted towards me, and we started on our short walk back to my home.

"Why are you late?" I demanded.

"I forgot something in school," she replied. Her voice was breathy, and her long, blonde hair flew in the wind. '

"Fine. But I was waiting here in the bitter cold, Darling. It's November in Ever After, for god's sake. Be faster next time," I scolded.

"I'm sorry," was Darling's half-hearted reply. I moved a bit faster, because my ears were starting to freeze. It seemed as if they would soon become two icicles stuck to my head.

"Guess what, Darling?" I asked, a smile suddenly lighting my face.

"What?" she asked, raising a pale eyebrow.

"Papa said he was going to kill a Rebel today. He is going to join the Royals in destroying the Rebel shops. He said it would be a big event, and lots will be broken," I whispered. I smiled and waited for her response. The date was stuck in my mind, for my father repeated it very often.

"Kill a Rebel?" she repeated, seeming shocked.

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "Isn't that so magnificent?" I asked, beaming.

"No! Not at all, Apple!" Darling shouted. I stared at her, my mouth wide open. I couldn't understand why she was so upset. Why wasn't she proud of Papa?

"Do you want to know a secret, Apple?" she whispered into my numb ear. I nodded. I loved secrets. I loved the way you kept them close to your heart and how dangerous they felt.

"I'm a Rebel," Darling declared. Although she said it in a soft whisper, I heard the power in her words.

"You?" I screeched. Darling only nodded. Suddenly, I felt the rain start to fall. Little plops of water on my jacket. I couldn't process what Darling had told me. But it can't be Darling! my mind screamed. I left Darling there, standing in the rain, and bolted straight to my house.
