CHAPTER TEN

The car ride back was how'd you expect a ride with her new boyfriend and his sister to go. Awkward. The ride to the carnival to the arcade wasn't awkward, so why all of a sudden was it? Maybe it was because Emi and Ryu kissed and were now dating. That was definitely it.

The familiar apartment building of Emi's was now in view and the two got out. Ryu wasn't going to let her walk alone, especially at night, he didn't know who lived in these apartments.

"See you soon, Emi!" Saeko called as the two left the jeep. Emi smiled and waved goodbye to her.

Once they were out of few of his sister, they took each others hand, walking up the three flights of stairs to make it to Emi's home. Once they arrived at her door, Emi stood on her tiptoes and kissed Ryu's cheek.

"I'll see you in school, okay?" She said, still on her tiptoes to be on near eye level with him. He smiled and touched his forehead to hers.

"Take care of Carl, alright?" He joked. Emi laughed and opened her door, giving him a small wave. He gave one back as the door shut behind her. He had to lean againest the wall in order to calm his racing heart. A permanent smile on his face.

As the door shut, she let out a happy sigh, her heart running at a million miles a minute. She called out for her mother, but no reply came. She noticed a note on the table and read it.

"Come down to the cafe. -Mom"

She seemed upset in her note, she always added a heart at least at the end of her notes. Emi placed the note back on the table and opened the door that led to the cafe. She walked down the stairs and stared around the kitchen, her mom wasn't there. She went out in the main area and stopped dead in her tracks.

Her heart stopped racing.

Her face was no longer red.

She no longer felt happy.

She saw someone she never wanted to see again.

Her father.

She turned slowly to her mom who was laughing and smiling with him. She felt her heart drop to her toes. This had to be a dream turned nightmare. How was it she was smiling with Ryu five minutes ago and now she was trapped here.

She turned around, fully intending to run away to her room. Until she heard his voice.

"Emi!" He called out. She slowly turned back around, a scowl on her face.

"Don't call me that." She spat, "Only people I love can call me Emi. It's Emiko to you."

"Emiko! Don't talk to your Dad that way!" Her mom lectured her.

All fight Emi had in her had run out hearing her mom say that. How could she be on his side?!

"He's not my Dad!" Emi said, tears coming to her eyes. She furiously tried to wipe them away. "How could you just let him back here after he left?!"

"I didn't leave Emi, it was a mutual agreement between your mother and I." He said.

"Why are you even here?!" Emi said loudly, "You and Mom don't even get along!"

"We've been talking for months now. It just took until now for him and Mika to come here." Her mom explained, casually sipping on some tea.

Emi just stared at the two. She felt betrayed. For four years she was told how terrible her father was, and now suddenly he was back and part of the family again?

She felt as if she'd explode if she stayed any longer with them, so she turned around and stormed upstairs to her room.

She laid on her bed and screamed into her pillow, every bit of anger she had being taken out on the poor pillow. She heard her laptop let out the skype call notification, she ignored it for a while until she noticed who was calling.

Ryu.

She scrambled to get to her desk, tapping on the accept button. A smile immediately came to her face.

"I knew it!" He said as soon as she answered. She looked at him in confusion. "I could like, sense you were upset!"

"That's impossible. I'm not upset." She defended. Ryu gave her a look and she gave up. "Fine. I'm a little upset."

"You wanna talk about it?" Ryu asked softly, "I'm here if you do."

She nodded. "Well, my dad and sister are here. I've only seen my dad though. And, my mom's getting along with him? I don't know if he's staying in this house or a hotel. If he's staying here, I can't stay here." She was crying, her face in her hands. She couldn't handle this. Everything was going fantastic until he showed up.

"Hey, if it gets bad, you can always stay at my house." He said comfortingly. She sniffed then smiled, composing herself. She blew him a kiss, he did one back, and they ended the call.

She made her way to her bed again. It was comforting to know that Ryu would always be there for her.
