Chapter 7

Jade

After Sawyer's reluctant permission to stay with the kids, Brianna and I turned to leave. I cradled a passed out, blood and dirt covered, five year old boy - also known as Caleb - in my arms as Brianna led me to the main pack house. Before I even took a step inside, a young woman approached me.

"Hello, you must be Jade. My name is Maria. I was assigned to take care of the children." Maria was a little shorter than me, maybe 5"5 and she had jet black hair. She seemed like the type of person who always follow the rules but I knew she would do whatever I asked her to do.

"Oh, then you must know where Dallas and Aaron are! Would you mind taking me to them?" I ask in a sweet voice and maybe with a tiny bit of sarcasm in between.

Maria shifted on her feet before meeting my eyes. "Um, I was told to not listen to-"

"Listen here Maria, I am not afraid of you or your alpha or whatever he is. You will not get blamed for anything that happens with me, unless you tried to kill me or something. And I'm having a very bad day today so maybe, just maybe, you could find it in your heart to just take me to the kids. Please."

Maria's eyes lower to the ground as a sign submission and respect. She turned around and lead us down a hall with many doors, then up some stairs and entered the second room on her left. Inside was Aaron cuddling into Dallas who was rocking back and forth.

"Get out." Dallas demanded before looking up. His eyes lit up with relief and happiness before drifting to his unconscious brother in my arms. "What happened to him?! One minute he's in here yelling at Maria, then he up and bolts out of here with Brianna on his heels!"

His eyes began turning black and his grip on Aaron got a whole lot rougher.

"Dallas, control your anger. Brianna, take Aaron from him before he does something he regrets. Maria, get out!" I was a little frustrated that Maria didn't get the hint that she wasn't wanted here and that after two years of being perfectly fine, everything comes crashing down on us now.

Maria turned to leave and Brianna pulled Aaron out of Dallas' arms.

"I'm going to clean Caleb up. I'll bring a wet cloth out so you can clean up, Brianna. Try not to break anything and please get along." They always get along so I doubt that will be a problem.

I walked into the bathroom which was conveniently the door to my right and set Caleb on the counter. I grabbed a facecloth and wet it, bringing it out to Brianna so she can wipe the blood off herself.

"Thank you," she whispers.

Turning around, I walked into the bathroom-again-and turned the water in the bath on. I begun taking Caleb's dirty clothes off when his hand moved a bit.

"J-Jade?" Caleb squints up at me, his voice scratchy. He winced in pain, shifting to make himself comfortable.

"Yeah, it's me. Please try not to make any sudden movements. It will only make the pain worse."

Caleb nods slightly before closing his eyes again.

I pick him up and make my way to the bath, turning the water off. "I'm going to put you in the bath now."

"Mmhmm," was the mumble of a reply I got.

I laid Caleb in the tub and begun washing all the blood and grime from his face. He eyes open, staring at me as I pour shampoo in my hand-whose shampoo it is, I have no idea-then proceeding to wash his hair. His eyes close again.

11:48 P.M.

Almost midnight.

And I was still up.

The children have been asleep for hours. Being sleep deprived from worrying takes a tole on an adult so just imagining what the kids feel like... Plus all the stress is adding up too. No kid should ever go through this.

I knew that if we stopped running and joined a pack, they would find us. And I was right! This is the whole reason why we ran! This is why we didn't stay with Zander! Now Caleb is injured and they know exactly where we are. They are going to do the exact same thing to this pack as they did to ours.

I will not let history repeat itself.
