December 2, 2006

You leave your house and start walking to the coffee shop where you were meeting your friend. As you open your door, you are greeted by a cool winters breeze. There was a certain type of stiffness in the air. A universal panic had flooded all of Tokyo. It had been almost 5 days since Kira was causing criminals from around the world to die of heart attacks. Being one yourself, this worried you. Government officials have started advising people to stay inside more often. The lack of control, the lingering thought that you could die at any minute was stressing you out. You enter the coffee shop, talking off your coat as you warmed up.

"One coffee please, with an extra shot of espresso", you ask the owner.

"Coming right up."

"Aneko!". You turn at the sound of your name, coming from a bubbly voice that you recognized as your friend Keomi. Seeing her in person was comforting, as the last few days have been terribly chaotic and you needed someone to talk to.

"Hey! How's it going?", you ask as you sit down with your coffee, taking a sip.

"Good. Last night Jeremy took me to the movies and a lovely dinner. He's so sweet! What's going on with you?".

"Keomi", you ask, changing the tone of the conversation," are you not worried at all? About whats happening with Kira?".

"Of course not! Why would I be? Kira only kills the dangerous criminals. We'll be fine."

She  notices your concern. "Why? Are you worried?"

"Yeah", you sigh. You used to work as an officer for the Japanese police force. One of your colleagues, Haruto Ogawa had sexually assaulted you. He was rich and held an important role in the precinct while being trusted by many. When the Chief of police believed him over you, you took Ogawa to court. Because of his wealth and status, he managed to get you convicted of falsely accusing him of a crime. You got sentenced 5 years in jail. You hid from the police and refused to complete the sentence, never returning to the police force.

"At least you changed your name, right?", Aneko adds on between bites of her muffin," That makes it difficult for anyone to find you, even Kira!", she explains.

"Yeah you're right. I guess I don't have much to worry about." You changed your name to Keomi Okada a little while ago in attempt to clean off your criminal record. Your real name is (y/n). Aneko's words relaxed your thoughts about Kira, but you were still a bit uneasy.

"Hey, I passed by the new ice skating rink on the way here. Wanna go check it out?", Aneko asks excitingly.

"Yes! I haven't been ice skating in so long!", you exclaim. You and Aneko begin to leave the shop.

As you continue to ramble on, you notice that Aneko wasn't saying anything back. This was quite unusual for her chatty self. You turn around to find her on the floor gasping for air. People start to help her as you stand in shock. Your heart started beating loudly, and the walls seemed as if they were falling.

"Quick, call the ambulance! She's having a heart attack!" A man yells out.

He checks her pulse and pauses before looking up at you.

"I'm sorry". He says empathetically. His eyes linger on you for a second, and then he backs off as the medics take her away.

Everything that happened that day was a blur. But two things were made clear to you. One, that her death had to be the work of Kira. And two, you were going to do anything it takes to find Kira and put an end to him.
