steve rogers knows he can count on natasha romanoff.

sure, he had his doubts at first. but she stayed next to him, his trustworthy partner, during the fall of SHIELD. in berlin, she betrayed her team to help him and bucky. even though she doesn't have any powers or super strength, she fought next to the other avengers in new york and sokovia.

now, he would trust her with his life.

sam wilson doesn't know much about agent romanoff.

they first met when she showed up on his doorstep with steve. she got him his suit back, and helped train him. they were on opposing sides with the accords, but she ended up saving steve.

sam doesn't know if he would trust her with everything, but steve would, and sam trusts steve.

so six months after their fallout with tony stark, steve and sam manage to pin natasha down to one of her safe houses. they need help, help natasha can give them.

steve knocks on the door at three in the morning. the paint is peeling, but it's not like he can judge. sam's practically bleeding out next to him, and he's not in any better shape.

natasha is catching up on some much needed sleep- granted, not great sleep- when she hears the knock. worried ross has found her, she quickly pulls on a pair of jeans and a tank top, ties her newly blonde hair back, and grabs a pistol.

opening the door cautiously, she's surprised to see steve smiling awkwardly at her. she didn't know they were still friends. he hasn't reached out, to ask if she made it out okay, or if she had a place to stay. natasha glances down at the blood dripping down onto her doorstep.

"you dyed your hair," steve says stupidly.

she smiles slightly.

"sorry," sam says awkwardly, gritting his teeth as he tries to stand up a little straighter.

natasha hesitates, then sighs. "come in," she says. she owes sam one, anyways. hopefully this will settle the score.

the two men step inside and natasha glances around outside to makes sure nobody followed them before closing and locking the door.

"the first aid kit is under the sink in the washroom," she tells them, gesturing down the hall.

steve helps sam walk to it and natasha grabs a couple of granola bars. she watches steve try to pull the bullet out of sam's leg for about ten seconds before pushing him out of the way and doing it herself.

it's normally how she shows affection, but she probably wasn't as gentle as she could've been.

natasha helps steve patch himself up and then lets them take her room. she takes the couch.

when sam and steve wake up, she's gone.

they stay at her house for about a week, before feeling bad about it and leaving. as far as they know, she never comes back to get the rest of her things.

two months later, after taking on a few small missions for free and jumping  from country to country, natasha has finally settled down into a small town in iceland. it feels good to help people again, but she's tired.

natasha's staying with an old lady, who gives her a bed and warm meals in exchange for taking her to her doctor's appointments and buying groceries.
