It was on one of their paired missions that both Rookwoods supposedly met their end in 1967, just three years before the first wizarding war officially took off in 1970, during one of the first attempts to reach out to the giants.
Due to the hostile nature of previous engagements, the giants did not take kindly to any wizards encroaching on their territory, be it due to potential negotiations or not, and (according to scattered reports) simply eliminated the group of deatheaters before they could even begin.
Lessons were learnt from this mission, even with the lives lost, and the giants did indeed join Voldemort's side along with other mistreated and misaligned beings when the war was officially declared.
