My heart froze in my chest.
No.
If it weren't for the vile man's arms around my stomach, I would've fallen to my knees.
Why, you might ask? Because standing before me, absolutely scathing mad was Lucas.
"You can't take her." He spoke again, more composed and calm than just seconds before.
I had to stop myself from closing my eyes and pretending I was dreaming. I was never an emotional person. Even throughout the process of having my body dragged from the cafeteria, my only thought was how playing Katniss backfired, and how the hulk of a man holding me needed to bathe.
But when it came to Lucas, I found myself at war. Whether it was our complicated past, or the friendship we'd built over the last year, he made me question myself.
Even now, looking at him standing before me, making a decision about as bad as the one I'd just made, I couldn't help but want him to turn around and go back under the table.
"Now why is that?" The man holding me asked, not even bothering to hide his amusement.
Lucas faltered. And that was all it took for Jason to climb out from under the table.
Fools! Do you not see where that move got me?
"Because we'll pay you." He spoke, loud and clear.
"More than whoever you're giving her to will." Lucas chimed in.
I sucked in a breath, looking around the cafeteria. Everyone hid in silence watching the scene before them unfold. Maybe if Jason and Lucas kept these men at bay for a while, the police would come.
Here's hoping.
The man holding me tightened his iron like grip. "How much?" He inquired.
"Would you loosen up? I get it, I'm trapped. But I seriously can't breath. And your bracelet is digging into my side, bloody thing hurts like a bitch." I whispered harshly to the man holding me.
He did nothing to loosen his hold.
Jerk face.
But he did continue his conversation with my brother and Lucas. "I said, how much?" He asked again, slightly aggravated.
Jason spoke first. "My father will pay you. He has millions at his disposal. And you said you were just giving the girls as an apology, right? Well, take another and I'll pay you for Evie."
"We'll cut you a check right now." Lucas added.
I still couldn't believe this was happening. The other men just stood by with squirming girls in their arms, watching the whole scene.
Shouldn't they be in a rush? Ya know, considering...
As if hearing my thoughts, one of the men who I couldn't see spoke."We really need to move boss."
The man holding me spoke again. "You just want her?"
I looked over at Jason and Lucas, begging with my eyes.
Lily.
I tried to silently nod my head in her direction, but eventually gave up and just ended up yelling. "Lily! You idiots!"
That earned me a smack on the back of the head from my captor.
Which earned him a double death glare from Jason and Lucas.
And of course while we were all stuck in our own little world, the other girls around me burst into tears. I did feel bad though, while we were all discussing freedom, they were fundamentally screwed.
I wanted to help them too, but at this point I felt the best way to save them was to get the police here.
It was Lucas' voice that cut through the silence. "We only want Evie."
At that, my head snapped up to him.
No no no no no...
I started squirming again, completely ready to rip someone's head off. I knew Lucas hated Lily after what happened, but I didn't think he would take it this far. And even now when I would glance up for a second in my squirming and kicking battle with the asshole holding me, I would catch glimpses of the look of utter betrayal on Lily's face and the cold look on Lucas'.
"Jason please..." I begged, looking up at him.
Jason just looked between Lucas and Lily before letting his features stone over. "You heard him. Just. Evie."
